A song! For me! How sweet. Thank you, sabrelady. And your lyrics are almost on a level with Tim Rice's. Perhaps nothing so stupendously idiotic as "Always hoped I'd be an apostle..." (Really? Did you really?!? Always? Did you always want to be Jesus' apostle specifically? No, that can't be - you would only have heard of him a few years prior when he began his ministry. Maybe you wanted to be John the Baptist's apostle, but he thought you were too pitchy and eliminated you on the first week of "Judaean Idol" - er... "Apostle." But I digress.)
I wonder what the tune is - did you write your own? Maybe you just set it to a pre-existing tune, like "Born Free." It looks like it could be sung to "Born Free." Of course, it would have more integrity if you wrote your own tune; but then, perhaps you weren't aiming for "integrity," were you?
There's a bit of inaccuracy in your lyric (not that lyrics need to be accurate, or even make any sense at all, as witnessed in the quote above): when you say I know nothing of what show you "see" (phrased in a delightful, semi-racist pidgin-English), it becomes a sort of gibberish, because, of course, I saw the show, too. And then to say I know nothing of you... that's a charming piece of non sequitur, because no one has discussed you.
Until now; and then, of course, only through the lens of your semi-literate lyrics, which paint an image (accurate or not) of an 8th grade drop-out who works at Auntie Anne's Pretzels at the mall, but has high dreams of moving up one day to the Dress Barn.

Wow.
Can't spell Douche without U!
Don't they use that joke in Carrie? Do you get royalties?
So what image (accurate or not) is painted by a caustic, four-paragraph response to being called "lame-o?"

Has anyone seen Jeremy Kushnier as either Jesus or Judas? I saw him as the latter tonight and he was FABULOUS, much better than Josh Young.

I just got tickets for Thursday nights show. I've never been to an "opening night" before. Is it more of a hassle than anything? or is it something everyone should experience?? I got the tickets discounted and couldn't say no. I've always enjoyed JC Superstar, I'm still excited...even after reading this thread :)
There will be lot's of Photographers there as you enter and leave the theatre, The audience response will be over the top. Usually an electric evening. Enjoy.
Just back from seeing tonight's performance with my daughter. We both have an inexplicable fondness for the show and were anxious to see how this stood up to the last go-round on Broadway. It doesn't actually open until tomorrow, but I doubt much is going to change in the next 24 hours.
Jesus has a nice voice, but no charisma that would explain his inspiring a following and I thought the choreography was just awful. The one performer who really delivered was Jeremy Kushnier as Judas. He was terrific and was rewarded with long applause after both of his big numbers. The audience response to the other big numbers was pretty lukewarm.
And it felt like the staging involved a whole lot of marching around in circles.
Tonight's winner: Jeremy Kushnier.
Is Young even going to make it to opening night?

I selfishly wish for Jeremy to be the opening night Judas.
I find it interesting (and pretty sad), that by all accounts Jeremy Kushnier is both a better Jesus and Judas than the two men he's understudying. I found both Young and Nolan to be quite bland, and kind of wish I had seen Kushnier in one of those roles, to be honest.
Of course, I'm not the least bit surprised, as he's been wonderful in everything I've ever seen him in. Way too much talent to be in the ensemble.
I selfishly wish for Jeremy to be the opening night Judas.
I do too. He'd get all the praise and make this production a lot better. Don't wish Young bad, but Kushnier is just better in the part. I secretly hope Kushnier gets to perform on opening night and gets the role.
Does anyone know if the critics saw Kushnier? If he garners the only positive notices how could the producers not allow him to go on?
Edit: Sorry I just read the link!

conspiracy theory: after all the vitriol against Josh Young...did producers tell him not to perform for critics because no one likes him?
I was wondering the same thing. It seems weird that the news of an illness sidelining someone during the press previews is just now coming forth. And aren't most press previews over an extended period of time? Like, all the papers don't attend the same show, right?

This is ridiculous. Young has been sick for a while, not just for press performances. It makes no sense for producers to ask one of the leads - who's gotten good reviews from critics in both cities the production has played - to step aside for press nights, but not replace him outright. They've had months and months of watching Young's performance and Kushnier played it a few times in La Jolla. If they'd wanted to get rid of Young, they had ample opportunity.
And RippedMan, when would you have liked an announcement to have been made about missing press performances? He was out last night the 20th, which was probably the first one. They probably waited to see if he'd be better for the rest of the week and found out today that he's not. They then made the announcement. Please explain what's "weird" about this?

Popping in to echo the sentiments about Jeremy Kushnier. Saw JCS tonight and he brought down the house! Hope he opens as Judas, and has it been that long since FOOTLOOSE? I feel so old ...
I wish I had seen his Judas!
Maybe this is rude to say, but he looks a little on the pudgy side for a Jesus, no?
God works in mysterious ways! LOL!
Looks like the dream won't come true.

massofmen!? vitriol?? the only negativity has been on this board! have you not read his reviews from every paper? NYT, Variety even UK daily mail!? From the past stops of this tour http://josh-young.com/reviews.html. It would be very sad if after all this work and the performance I saw, if he had to miss more shows. But sick is sick!
After the performance I saw, the Producers should be praying he was out sick for opening night. Besides few reviewers attend opening night. Most have already seen the show and wrote it up. Reviews start being released at curtain.
Does this production use or jettison the additional second verse of Hosanna? (Sing out for yourselves, for you are blessed... etc.)
I'm just wondering, because the addition or deletion of that verse is a rather large change in the text's treatment of the Jesus character, as it is the only time ANYWHERE in the script that he speaks as a religious figure, teacher, guru or even a leader of any kind. The only other evidence of his career even having a religious or mystical bent is when other characters mention him as allegedly having performed miracles. Part of the concept or not, all of Jesus's other material deals either with his fame or with his rage against the heavens.
They use that verse.
