Wow you must have seen some BAD performances if you think that! She was dreadful.

A rave from The New Yorker basically calling her performance "definitive" whilst not:

http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2016/05/09/jessica-langes-harrowing-journey

O’Neill wrested his tale from his own heart, with cunning and fortitude.

Lange has all of that, too. I don’t want to call hers a definitive performance, because that would imply that her Mary is a kind of fly in amber—which is the last thing you think as you watch her jump from flirtatiousness to maternal concern, from junkie selfishness to contempt for male self-regard, from deviousness to the sting of loss. I’ve always had a deep admiration for Katharine Hepburn’s interpretation in Sidney Lumet’s extraordinary 1962 film of the play. Hepburn was never better than when using her face like a Kabuki mask to express Mary’s hurt; her downcast eyes and lips spoke volumes on top of O’Neill’s volumes. Obviously, Hepburn was helped by the camera; Lumet could zoom in on the rage and deceit. Because Lange is onstage—in medium shot, as it were—she has to call on different tools. First, there’s her voice. Her mellifluous, murderous sound—the way she raises her voice without raising her eyes, because she doesn’t want anyone to see her dope-dilated pupils—is a lesson in the power of intonation as a form of emotional expressiveness. Then, there’s her body. Lange is entirely free onstage, because she’s sure of her craft, of how to move when moving in for the kill or just trying to show interest in someone other than herself. (Particularly chilling is Lange’s understanding of how dope makes the skin itch; she scratches at her neck subtly to show us what Mary feels.) At the same time, Lange isn’t dying to be seen. She turns to look out the window or keeps her face averted whenever Mary feels trapped or is planning a new lie. Lange forces us to listen more acutely to what Mary is saying, to register how her body language contradicts her brazen imagination.

The director, Jonathan Kent, handles Lange’s genius the way it should be handled—by stepping to the side, letting you see that it’s there but not interfering. (His only real flaw is the set, which is pitched at an angle, thus limiting the audience’s view.) Of course, Lange’s performance wouldn’t be possible without her co-stars, who clearly love her without necessarily being up to her level. (, uninspired, either, and he illuminates aspects of James that I never fully felt before: his status as an immigrant, a perennial outsider, and his role as an enabler—in effect, James is paying for everyone’s addictions in more ways than one. Shannon doesn’t connect very well during the first part of the nearly four-hour evening, but, as Mary turns against Jamie, he finds his character, a man who’s trying to be a man, if only he can get beyond his desire to be infantilized by a mother who long ago abandoned him. Mary and Jamie are the realists in the family. They know who they are, while James and Edmund just want the world to be different. It’s thrilling to watch Shannon go toe to toe with Lange as Mary deteriorates and grows chemically stronger, and as day lapses into night, in that house, which is miraculously—despite the wreckage within—still standing. ♦

Lange will be on "LIVE with Kelly and Michael" this upcoming Tuesday (May 10) to promote "Long Day's Journey into Night".  Hopefully she'll talk about her work in  Louis C.K.'s "Horace and Pete", "Wild Oats" (with Shirley MacLaine for Andy Tennant), "Feud" (with Susan Sarandon for Brad Pitt and Ryan Murphy) and "The Lonely Doll" (with Naomi Watts for Gia Coppola).

This has turned out to be an incredibly productive year for her.

As usual with these threads, I'm curious how many who declare one actress the best over all the others have actually seen the performances by all the others.

So, both Brantley and Isherwood of the New York Times predict and WANT Lange to win the Tony.

Members.  Do not visit any message board with this guy's name as a poster.  As a Lange fan myself, he is embarassing and thrown off most sites he's on for his obsessive behavior.  Reciting her interviews and any mention of her on web is commonplace for him.  I 'hope' Lange wins the Tony.  Saw her in 'Streetcar' (brilliant if u saw her at the end of the run like I did) and 'Glass' (not so good).  Looking forward to seeing her in this in coming weeks.  Cheers.  Mark-Alexis...no need to respond to my valid comments.  I wont be visiting this thread anymore.  Just want to warn others that u do not represent anyone who has been fan of Lange.

She is wonderful in the production, that being said anyone who comes to Broadway in this particular role should be.  There is no reason to see it unless the actors are expert at interpreting O'Neill.

And I think this is too soon to come back to Broadway no matter how good the cast is. The 2003 revival won Tony Awards for best revival, for best actor in a play Brian Dennehy (James) and for best actress in a play Vanessa Redgrave (Mary). It also had Oscar winner and Tony winner Philip Seymour Hoffman (Jamie), and Tony winner Robert Sean Leonard (Edmund), and was directed by Tony winner Robert Falls.

It is beyond disrespectful for another Broadway production to come in not even 15 years after that celebrated 2003 revival. Do this at the National in Washington, at BAM in Brooklyn, at any other major institution, but Broadway, No...we don't need it.   With Jessica's newfound relevance with American Horror Story she should come to New York in a new play or a classic that warrants a revival. I think its seriously disgraceful.

I also think it's a smarter choice for the Tony Awards to honor Lupita N'yongo's performance in Eclipsed. A wonderful performance from a rising star with diversity in brave new play about women. A tony award for the performance could make it a new classic to be performed all over the world.

Mods, seriously, can you kick this Alexis guy out of here? Pretty direct violation of the "spamming, baiting or trolling" rule in your guidelines.

Why?  Am I on here on the hour, every hour, all day, everyday like you?  No.

Have I insulted you like you've tried insulting me? No.

Am I arguing with people who don't agree with my opinion or the general consensus?  No.

Am I arguing with nimrods who go about attacking me, making untrue and defamatory remarks about me whilst not even addressing the topic of the thread?  Yes.

The mods won't kick me out because I'm doing absolutely nothing wrong.

Those replying to my thread to attack me obsessively for their own God knows what ulterior motives are the ones that are spamming and should be banned.

Thank you.

So, a new team of acclaimed artists deciding to revive *the* beloved Classic American play 13 years after the previous Broadway production is something you deem "disrespectful" and "disgraceful".  Wow.  No comment.

As for awarding the play, "Eclipsed", I agree.  They should award the play itself.

I think it's just plain silly to think that everyone who likes O'Neill or who would enjoy seeing Long Day's Journey happened to see the last revival.  Surprise -- Not everyone into theatre happens to live in NYC and can go to every major revival.

Some of us who did NOT see the last revival, are thrilled that we will be able to see THIS revival.  I can't wait and wish I had bought tickets for earlier than the last week of the run.   But stop being so smug as to suggest that everyone saw the last revival therefore there is no point in reviving it yet again.  The theatre world does not and should not revolve around the shows YOU'VE seen.

Incidentally one friend who DID see the last one is raving that Ms. Lange's performance is even more layered and exquisite.

Are you friggin' kidding me with this?!?! Seriously?!?!?

I am absolutely not kidding. The unspoken, but understood rule among artists and producers used to be a minimum of 20 years. I absolutely agree. That's what makes these  revivals so special is that they don't come every few years....especially one as celebrated as the 2003 revival. Also the play has been documented on film by greats like Kevin Spacey and Jack Lemmon which you can get get on Youtube if you want. We don't need this revival, it devalues all the the productions before it and it over exposes the play which should be done every 20 years or so.
