So it seems that only the 86 revival was not disrespectful, since all other revivals of the show had less than 20 years between them.
Posters who excessively use gifs to get their point across bore me and prove they are incapable of expressing their thoughts on their own.
I guess by standingo's standards the 2008 Arthur Laurents directed revival of "Gypsy" starring Patti LuPone was downright disrespectful and an affront to the 2003 Sam Mendes helmed revival starring Bernadette Peters.
HOW DARE THEY REVIVE "GYPSY" A MERE FIVE YEARS AFTER THE LAST PRODUCTION!!!

look, you can disagree about the disrespectful comment all you want. Of course, your opinion is valid and I'm glad you are sharing it. But there does seem to be a loss of respect for the work of other artists on Broadway these days. And reviving a show anytime someone gets the idea to do it devalues the work of the artists before it when it happens too soon. It also overexposes the play. We're seeing it too much in Hollywood too with remakes of movies that don't need to be remade. It's for profitability more than it is for the sake of showcasing great art. That's how I see it. I may be in the minority on this chat feed. But I know lots of people who work in the commercial theater agree. Estates of the two masterworks, Long Days Journey and Menagerie, should limit the the availability on Broadway for at least the next ten years. Of course they should revisit them with acting greats like Miss Field and Miss Lange, but I think both of these are too soon.
Could anyone possibly suggest that David Tennant disrespected Jude Law by assaying Hamlet? Or that Benedict Cumberbatch disrespected David Tennant?
Why should comparably rapid successive Mary Tyrones or Amanda Wingfields or Madame Roses be considered any different?

I did read another forward by Lange on "Long Days Journey into Night" published a few years ago (it may even be the same forward included in the multimedia edition) and I have a hard copy of the play, but I still want to check this edition out.
I hear it's the first play presented like this. Do you think they did a good job? Is it worth the purchase?
It is nicely presented, but if you already have a copy of the play you can probably find most of the archival material online

The first part of this post... Jesus, the sense of superiority and pretentiousness -
The second part of this post - so wonderfully snarky -
I saw "LDJ" yesterday and could not believe Jessica Lange's powerhouse performance! I've seen her previously but after last night, WOW! She starts out slowly but then, my god, amazing and so moving. You honestly do not feel that it is almost four hours. I thought that Gabriel Byrne and John Gallagher were terrific too.
(and I still can't believe they were all on mics!) The sound people have done a superb job).

Oh Jeez. I'm all like, "YAS, QUEEN. YAS!"
I can't wait to see her win the Tony. A CROWNING ACHIEVEMENT in a spectacular career.
*Side Note; DId you know that Whitney Houston's actual favorite actress was Jessica Lange? Look it up.
Well... I guest I'm in the minority here. I saw the show recently and pretty much disliked everything about it from the directions to the lackluster performances. I was seated on the right hand side (but still centered) and I had a perfectly fine view of the back of Jessica Lange's head for 95% of the show. The blocking was horrible and favored the center and house left of the audience. None of the performances did anything for me, and I'm quite surprised this got as many nods as it did. Overall, a VERY disappointing production in my book. Easily one of my least favorite offerings this season.

Lange was on Charlie Rose last night, discussing Long Day's Journey into Night and Horace and Pete. Fascinating.

Great interview......How much do I love Miss Lange's work? To get on the Amtrak and travel three days to see her performance.....(also Michael Shannon)

She was stunning on Rose:
She's so humble and down to earth. Definitely the nervous type but so unpretentious.
All of you cold-blooded butches out there, please be kind to her. She deserves this, both for her monumental, definitive performance and because she's, you know, Jessica Mother****ing Lange.

How un-apropos, lol.

Lastly, I must say, drunk-posting is not the tea.
Anyway, I meant no offense in my posts above. I wrote in drunken jest.
I just think this legend and true acting genius deserves the love despite the cruel detractors.
Love you all! xoxo
