Beginning in April, Jenifer Lewis will play Motormouth Maybelle in Hairspray, according to the Pasadena Weekly!

She will be fabulous!
If you have the Hairspray 2-Disc Soundtrack, Jenifer Lewis sings the alternate "Come So Far" demo recording, "Turn Back The Hands Of Time."
So now both "Ronelles" of 'Deloris & The Ronelles' have played Motormouth -- is Whoopi next?

Plus... she has a long history with Marc Shaiman as she was one of Bette Midler's Harlettes in the early 80's. She can be seen in the video of Bette's ART OR BUST concert video (of the DETOUR Tour).
She's going to make one sensational Motormouth.

Posted: 2/7/08 at 8:51pmDidn't Jenifer do one or two of the HAIRSPRAY workshops? I want to know when B.J. Crosby, who also did workshops of HAIRSPRAY, will be playing the role.

In an interview on "Soap Talk," Lewis explained that the role was developed (musically at least) with her in mind! She then got an offer to star in a Lifetime series and declined Hairspray's offer.
After the interview she sang a rendition of "Big, Blonde, and Beautiful" accompanied by Marc Shaiman.
Anyway, I'm so excited that it finally worked out for her to play the role!!!

I don't know if she's white
I don't know if she's black
All I know is Jackie's back
Pure brilliance

I was hoping the rumors of Loretta Devine were true.
Lewis definitely doesn't have my favorite "I Know Where I've Been."

Posted: 3/27/08 at 12:51pmOh, now I have to see the show on Broadway. I saw the 1st National Tour, but I LOVE Jennifer Lewis. Her scene with the French girl at the party in The Brothers is PRICELESS! And she was good in Dirty Laundry, which I saw recently.

Posted: 3/27/08 at 1:01pmOhh she's come out as bi-polar long ago. She actually did a concert act in Cali called Bi-Polar, Bath and Beyond. She's also talked about it openly on Oprah. She'll be a perfect Motormouth. I'm so excited about that!!!

Jazzy, I took that out of my post when I realized that she had discussed it.
I don't know how I missed "Jackie's Back" but it just went to the top of my Netflix queue.

Is the performance online anywhere?
