After seeing all three Shug Averys, I thought that Ms. Holliday was almost as good as Heather Headley, in her own quirky way. I was especially struck by the scene right before I'm Here this time, and found Jennifer Holliday to be absolutely heartbreaking in that scene. Wonderful performance.

This. What Holliday does in this scene is indeed heartbreaking. Maybe it's her age playing into the character of Shug, but Holliday makes you feel for her & Celie at the same time during this scene. It also makes "I'm Here" that much better. Simply a stunning scene leading into a stunning performance of "I'm Here".
