According to everything I've read, the Papermill production is a kick-off for a national tour that will lead to amateur licensing for schools. But maybe with this cast, and depending on reviews and ticket sales, they will consider a Broadway transfer.
Although, with Jeremy Jordan opening in BONNIE AND CLYDE this fall, they'd have to replace him for a Broadway run, and that doesn't seem to make much sense. But who knows?

"Kara Lindsay will play Katherine, a role created for the stage version of Newsies"
I'm curious what this is about, as there was already a 'love interest' of a sort in the story - as well as Ann-Margret's character.

To be fair, at least judging by the film, Newsies doesn't exactly need, or even try to pretend, its group of motley newsies are all that tough. Sure there's a brawl, but they're not remotely threatening the way ideally the WSS gangs should be to at least some degree. Actually this approach may be one of the (many, many, many) problems with the film. I am curious to see what Harvey Fierstein does with the book, as I think it needs a ton of work (it's probably good to have a few more female characters if they want to make it a two act show--though I wonder if he'll play up the camp or homoeroticism to any degree, consiering the targeted audience which seems to be mainly teen and pre teen girls).
Yeah they prob shoulda cast more actual teen guys (although some of the guys in the movie were in their mid to late 20s), but the high point of this show prob should be the dancing, so that could be a reason...
It's too bad Jack Feldman is there still as lyricist--I'm not a big fan of Garth Slater's lyrics, but I'd take him rewriting, and writing new songs, anyday over Feldman, who I think is pretty awful.

Posted: 8/4/11 at 9:22amAs a big fan of 'Newsies,' I happen to love many of the rousing songs by Menken and Feldman, most notably 'Carrying the Banner,' 'Santa Fe' and 'Seize the Day.' (And I believe you're referring to GLENN Slater, not Garth Slater. Glenn wrote the lyrics to Menken's songs in 'Sister Act.')

I have a friend that is cast in the ensemble and he is on a "Production Contract". He has been told it will most likely transfer directly to broadway for a spring opening after the Papermill run.

Hopefully he'll stick with Newsies and let Stark Sands play Clyde since he was way better anyway.

Posted: 8/6/11 at 1:06amHa, I did mean Glenn. I like a lot of the songs too--Santa Fe was one of my audition songs as a teen. I just think Feldman is an incredibly mediocre, and non dramatic lyricist. (Though I do always wonder why Disney did this as their big attempt at a live action musical return instead of A Little Princess, the first planned one which I could have seen doing better at the time. One of the songs Menken/Feldman did for it, Take Care of My Heart, is lovely and is on Debbie Shapiro's Menken album).

I largely like the work Feldman did on NEWSIES. Glenn Slater can also be pretty mediocre when it comes to writing dramatic lyrics and sometimes his lyrics just depart from character and situation completely. Feldman's lyrics for NEWSIES are at least as dramatic as anything Slater has written with Menken and probably better than some.
The real question is - why is there no Bryan Denton listed here?
