I adore Jerry and was thrilled when he was named - but I was disappointed in the tribute. I don't think the show really came alive until the McCartney tribute (still on now). I wish I'd recorded this.
edit to add: I LOVE watching the whole audience - including the other award winners - singing along. EVERYBODY knows this man's music!
The McCartney tribute definitely takes the cake.
Isn't this great?!
Herman's tribute was a let down,
Isn't this great?!
Yes! I enjoyed the Merle Haggard section, but this tribute to McCartney is wonderful!

The McCartney section was the best? REALLY? Between the random punk-like opening, the two singers who sounded disgusting together and the random screaming in the middle of a beautiful song I thought it was one of the worst. It got better when James Taylor got out, and the whole audience singing was beautiful, but it couldn't make up for the mediocrity that was the majority of the tribute.
Oh, crap! First KC Honors in years I haven't watched, and Matt Bomer was on. CRAP. Well, I hope it ends up on YouTube.
At least it wasn't Tim DeKay, or I would have had to commit hara-kiri. Neal is adorable, but my heart belongs to Peter.
The Herman tribute was put together by my least favorite "go to guy" but it did feature two of his cuties, Spencer and Charlie.
Benanti just needs softer or less make-up.
IF HE WALKED INTO MY LIFE, would have been very appropriate, maybe a duet for Angela and Edie.
Bomer was a bummer but O'Hara was luminous.
It got better when James Taylor got out,

LOL - it's all a matter of taste. That's when I thought it slowed down.
Is it bad that I hoped Matt Morrison would be performing as a Cagelle?
Vocally, Hudson's performance was wonderful. However, I don't think she connected with the material or lyrics in the song at all.

Sutton's performance itself was not awkward. And, with under a minute onstage in that rushed tribute, with a little march on and off while emoting a great vocal to get the song out for the general TV audience to relate to Herman, what do you want. She's not going to play Dolly for real anytime soon, though she did deliver the lyric with a sense of relating to it. One can be of any age and feel the need for renewal and to join in before the parade passes by. She will make her own vivacious mark with Reno at an age nearly ten years older than when Merman played the role. I do get tired of all the mainly negative comments I see about her on this sight and joined just to make this one post. Sutton will be up in that box herself in a few decades. Except, she won't look bored. (Though I didn't think Herman was bored) She'll be clapping for the performers and screaming "Yaaayyy!!!" as she did onstage tonight for Jerry when the whole line-up came out at the end.

To the posters who thought Jerry Herman looked bored or wishing to be somewhere else, I am sure you are sorely mistaken, or crazy.
The man is receiving, perhaps the highest honor one can receive in the arts in this country, he has had amazing hits, great flops, fought sickness and seen movies made of his shows and one of his favorites shows revived very successfully. I'm sure he was busting with pride and emotion inside, and if he didn't bust out crying or run naked thru the Kennedy Center doesn't mean he wasn't enjoying himself.
And, is Bill T. Jones BF a Budhist?

In this year's awardees were two out, unapologetic, hiv+ gay men who never thought they'd see the year 2000.
They've seen them all and, my dear,
They're still here.
OK, I was shocked about Matt Bomer (as many apparently were). Somewhere I read that he had some stage work under his belt after attending Carnegie Mellon, but I couldn't find anything last night other pictures of him kissing his boyfriend online. Does anyone know if he has real theater experience?
Thanks,
TD

Who were those kids who randomly came out singing I Am What I Am?
The kids singing was silly. Of course, they wouldn't have had the guts to have a man in a dress singing.
I feel like I should've like this more than I did. I mean, I like the songs they picked. I love all the performers. But, I just thought it came off as rushed and awkward.
Living on the otherside of the world all I've seen of the ceremony is what is on youtube. I thought the tribute excellent. Who did the choreography? I thought it was terrific.
Jerry looked very distressed or ill. I hope he is well.
As for the tribute, it was a mess. Can we never see Matthew Morrison onstage again, please? Loved the grande dames of the theatre- Angela, Carol and Chita. But "I Don't Want to Know" is such a great song, why did they have to stage a stupid dance around it? Chita can sing well. She doesn't need to dance all the time. The song is powerful on its own.
Some of the dancing was lovely, but there was a bit too much stage action taking place. Felt excessive.
Saw me some cute chorus boys, though.
I'm still confused with Claire Danes talking about starting her career in dance? Anyone ever see her dance before My So-Called Life? Was there choreography in Terminator 3? I think even Bill T. Jones was like WTF?
It is my understanding that what is televised is an edited version of what actually takes place. The pieces themselves may not have been as awkward as the editing made them feel.
