Jersey Boys - Toronto

Tag - Like I said - that was the response from Dancap that I got.
Re: Bob Martin at the Mirvish press conference
He hosted the Mirvish 2006/2007 season press conference as the Man-in-the-Chair. This was in February 2006 prior to the show opening on Broadway. The Mirvishes did the second commercial run of the show, so they used the character of the Man-in-the-Chair as the introducer. The curtain went up on him in the dark, and he got an envelope... he opened it up and it was the Mirvish Season brochure, and the whole press conference was him flipping through the pages of the brochure... and for each show there was a speaker who would come out, etc...

whoa, why all the Drabinsky hate?
if it wasn't for Garth D., Toronto would still be a second-tier tour stop.

Thanks!
I think they have the potential to be a big producer in the city. Aubrey Dan (the president) has and is willing to put in large amounts of money. The company has also established themselves in New York and actively are creating relationships with Broadway producers.
A large amount of their success depends on securing their own venue (Toronto Centre for the Performing Arts) or possibly even buying the Canon or Panasonic (as rumoured).
A problem with their first season, while rightly being cautious (but at the same time taking big risks) is that their tour engagements are quite short and their ticket packages/subscriptions are quite high. Compared to Mirvish, people might be turned off. BUT the Dancap season is much more exciting then what Mirvish has to offer.
It so hard to call whether Dancap in the long term will succeed. Their first season and the ability to maintain a sitdown (yes, Jersey Boys) will dictate that.

You maintain that it's a sitdown, but where/what is your source of information?

Tag, look at the dancap website. It says for further information, go to www.jerseyboysTOUR.com. Looks like the touring production to me!
And Den and Impintern: Drowsy Chaperone's played in Toronto 4 times. First time was at the Fringe Festival. Then the Mirvishes financed a run at Passe Muraille, Then they produced two commercial runs at the Wintergarden and put one of them on their subscription season. Sure Bob Martin hosted the Mirvish press conference for them. He owes them a lot of thanks for thier support paying the bills for the show's developmmnt before it was a Broadway hit.

And like I said, Dancap's official response is that JERSEY BOYS in Toronto will be an extended engagement of the tour. If it was going to be a sit-down production, that would've been something Aubrey Dan would have touted to the rafters! It's not like he has held back on other things, leaking everything to the press. Why wouldn't he announce that?
But Tag, if you are absolutely sure it's a sit-down, do you have better evidence/argument than "Des McAnuff was at the press conference, therefore it is ABSOLUTELY a sit-down"?
Hmmmm?
"Exactly."

I wrote that Des McAnuff was at the press conference but never said "therefore it is ABSOLUTELY a sit-down".
Regardless I give up and don't care anymore.

I haven't seen anyone say it explicity, but Aubrey Dan and Des McAnuff appear to have given the Toronto media the impression that "Jersey Boys" will be a sit-down.
McAnuff gave interviews in March after visiting the TCA. The
Star's Richard Ouzounian quoted him as saying that he and choreographer Sergio Trujillo were "looking forward to their mutual homecoming". On the subject of the controversy of getting the TCA Main Stage or Elgin, McAnuff said, "I'm just very much looking forward to doing Jersey Boys in Toronto."
On the same day, it was announced that Dan had acquired the Canadian rights to the show. Is that necessary for a tour stop? I don't know.
In various articles, The Globe and Mail has said that Dan will "produce"/"mount"/"launch" the show. That language seems to suggest that they, at least, were led to believe that it is a local production.

Posted: 5/2/07 at 1:46amIt was last year's Tony winner for best musical and is a huge success (critically and at the box office) on Broadway and everywhere it tours. Not having seen it though, I'm not quite sure what the appeal is.

You know, I pretty much was saying that before I saw it in January. :) It's a great show -- but it's not really immediately evident as to why.

I had my first chance to see it in March '06, and then made it a must include on my latest NYC visit in March of this year. So come me down as looking forward to the Toronto "three peat"
It is wonderful entertainment because it includes clever staging, a sensitive, emotional approach, its enlightening , and all that around music that is toe tapping recognizable, no matter what your age.

Posted: 5/2/07 at 1:53pmYou're right postergirl. My mistake. I emailed Mirvish to make sure and they said it was just one at the Wintergarden, May 29 to July 28, 2001. They did the production at Passe Muraille in 1999. I stand corrected.

I should have asked Mr. Mcanuff myself when I talked to him at the stage door but noooo! Why do I always get brain fats when at the stage door and my mind goes blank? Must be the euphoria of seeing the cast and the powerful director and choreographer! Yes, I got Sergio Trujillo's autograph :P
