Posted: 3/26/07 at 1:13pmThe city of Toronto would be stupid not to rent out The Toronto Centre for the Performing Arts. They loose SO much money a year on that empty place.

Posted: 3/31/07 at 11:41amGod bless Garth Drabinski, that stupid mother. And now he has the nerve to have that triple sensation show. I hope he gets driven into the ground.

Posted: 3/31/07 at 2:00pmPanasonoc is 700 seats. Its no good for any of the Dancap shows. Does Darbinski have anything to do with Dancap? What do you hear about that?

Drabinski has nothing to do with Dancap, I don't know where that came from.
And the Panasonic could work for something like Avenue Q or Spelling Bee because they can be more intimate.
EricP2 do you know anything about the Crazy for You production?

No. I just know the name is on their website. Look at the source code! Isn't there a non-equity tour of Crazy for You? I hope that's not what they're talking about.
Th e Panasonic is intimate, but it only has 700 seats. That's not big enough to make any money off a touring show that's only there for a few weeks.

Yeah that production of CRAZY FOR YOU is supposed to be non-equity.
Anyway... latest thing in the paper adds on THE PIRATE QUEEN as another production that Aubrey Dan wants to bring... he's also one of the major investors of the Broadway production.
So... to recap...
THE DROWSY CHAPERONE
AVENUE Q
SPELLING BEE
CRAZY FOR YOU
MY FAIR LADY
3 'MO DIVAS
THE PIRATE QUEEN
JERSEY BOYS
All at the Elgin with the possibility of JERSEY BOYS going to the Toronto Centre, if the city will allow him to have the theatre for a six-month run.
Also, latest news is that Aubrey Dan's put in a bid to buy the Live Nation theatres in Toronto - both the Canon and the Panasonic. The little twist here is that Clear Channel (the parent company of Live Nation) gave the Mirvishes the management of the Canon Theatre in a multiyear deal that's supposed to stay in place even if the theatre changes owners. I can imagine Aubrey Dan trying to buy the Mirvishes out of this contract if he does indeed get the Canon Theatre.
The big media launch/premiere launch party is tomorrow at the Elgin Theatre. He's flying in a bunch of New York producers on a chartered jet from Newark... he says the entertainment will be worth their while.

Dancap is an investor in the Broadway version of The Pirate Queen and has the Canadian rights. That doesn't mean that it will ever play in Canada...especially after what we are hearing about the Broadway version.
Anyway I'll be at the media launch tomorrow and will report back!

I would hope Bob Martin will be there...
Maybe some of the Broadway Avenue Q members? Or Jersey Boys?
We'll find out soon enough.

Posted: 4/26/07 at 1:47pmIt doesn't say anything about Jersey Boys being a sit-down. A 6-month run does not mean it is a sit-down. And there was no confirmation of dates either.

I understand it to be a sit-down. The six month figure is not the run of the show, but the guaranteed minimum rent that Aubrey Dan has offered to the Toronto Centre for the Arts if they let him move in next July. It's still up in the air because those in charge are trying to decide whether continuing to be a drain on taxpayers is preferable to using the facility for its intended purpose.
If it doesn't go in there, it'll go to the Elgin in January 2009 where a long run would displace a lot of regular tenants (TIFF, Ross Petty, etc.).

Jersey Boys dates will be confirmed May 30th at the latest. The Toronto Centre for the Arts council meets May 15th I believe to discuss their venue and the show.
And it is absolutely a sitdown. Des McAnuff was at the launch party on Monday.

Well, just because Des McAnuff was at the press conference doesn't mean JERSEY BOYS in Toronto will be a sit-down. Kevin McCollum was there as well, and DROWSY and AVENUE Q are not gonna be sit-down productions.
It's very standard to get artists/producers/creative team people flown out to do publicity events for touring runs such as pressers, so this is no different.
Last year, for example, the Mirvishes had Bob Martin, Joan Collins, Linda Evans, Martin Short, Marc Shaiman, the Goodspeed producer, come out for their season announcement. For their LOTR announcement, they flew in the whole creative team, and cleared the stage of the Princess of Wales (loaded out the sets for DA KINK IN MY HAIR for one day). They did the same for DIRTY DANCING... loaded out the sets for ORPHEUS DESCENDING for a day and had the London cast perform on the Royal Alex stage.

I almost forgot the most important part :-p
JERSEY BOYS in Toronto will be an extended engagement of a tour. I emailed the publicist at Dancap and she clarified this.
