Why do they only seem to be looking at Filipina girls for this role? Is the Lea Salonga connection that great? You would think in a movie version you would want to try and at least pretend to differentiate between Asian countries lol

The talent coming out of any of the top Musical Theater programs in any one year is far superior to the AI finalists in any year. AI is clearly a second or even third tier talent pool, and it baffles me that people continue to put some of these reality show contestants on a pedestal above those who who have not only worked and trained and performed for years in live theater, but have consistently shown that they are more talented.

and blah blah blah blah blah to you too.

I also would rather that they cast a non-Filipina girl in the role. An actual Vietnamese actress would really be awesome.

"I'd much rather see JuJubee in the role"
A+ Jordan. A+
Perhaps it's her age that does it for me, curry, but she just lacks the depth and substance needed for a role like this. She's more like Elle Woods than she is like Kim, if you ask me. I don't think she could handle the emotional side of it. Again, her talent aside.

it's not so much the Lea Salonga connection... but the Philippines connection... in the Miss Saigon book I think they mention how they obviously found Lea from the audition in Manila, but the Asian cast pretty much came from the Philippines... they were just so impressed with the talent that came out of that country... besides the Japanese cast.... look at the national tours and Broadway and London productions... pretty much all the Kims have been of Filipino descent...
and I don't care what kind of Asian they cast as long as they can sing the crap out of the songs and act it!
"You bettah wise up, grrl. Saigon is falling, and your baby daddy ain't here!"
Cameron Mackintosh: anything goes.
That man has made me so sad. He makes the baby Cosette cry.
The man has impeccable taste and insight for innovation, which means he will cast Wing as Kim and Susan Boyle as Ellen.
Susan Boyle could be Gigi!
Well if that's the case then he'd probably cast Paul Potts as Chris.
A unibrow Gigi is just what the producer ordered, along with cheesy CGI and dynamics new, glorious stagings, and doubling and trebling in orchestra.
What does that entail? Who cares! It means a few more hundred acres of land so dude could build a multi-level outhouse. Next to a summer home. In Antarctica.

Jessica's performances lack every kind of depth. Her vibrato annoys me and is not suitable for a role like this. She sounds too old and mature, like she's imitating Jennifer Hudson.
Also her face looks too "mexican" to me.
Being (partly) asian is not enough for this role.
Another thing is, they can do stuntcasting for this film, but only for the roles of the Engineer, Gigi or John. Not for Chris or Kim. Kim has to be an unknown and they should do a worldwide and very elaborate search for that role. I wish they would finally quit considering the only 3 well known (partly) asian girls that are "famous" at the moment. Charice is about as far from a Kim as you can imagine, the same goes for Jessica, lacks all the substance and emotional depth and Anna Maria can not sing from her soul.
So, Kim and Chris should be unknown, but it would be a wonderful idea if someone like Nicole Scherzinger would play Gigi.
If only Chris Evans could sing (maybe he can idk), he would be great as Chris. I think Kim should be the only character played by an unknown. The rest has to be stuntcasting, or at least some of them. With movie musicals, there has to be "star power".

Chris Evans actually can sing. Not sure if he has musical theatre chops, but I could probably overlook that.
Jessica Sanchez would make a better Gigi.
I second JuJubee for Kim!!!!!!

Anyone have any thoughts on who you would like to see as Ellen?
Jessica Biel. Big enough name to bring some people in, small enough part
Kristen Bell is a good singer but may not have the dramatic skills.

I don't think Jessica Biel is THAT big of a name. What can she say has been a hit for her since "7th Heaven"?

She may not have a string of hits, but she still is a name. She gets consistent work, including the new Anthony Hopkins/Helen Mirren movie. She is in a celebrity power couple.
Sure they could get ScarJo, Reese, or other bigger names but Ellen is a small, thankless role.
Can Rachel McAdams sing? Or Christina Hendricks? Claire Danes?

Personally, I think Jessica has a lovely voice and was great on AI when she chose the right material. I think she's an excellent choice for the film adaptation of MISS SAIGON. She's recognizable enough to draw in the younger crowd, and obsure enough not to be a distraction. Physically, I think she's just about perfect. If she can act, it'll be a home run. And while we're on the subject, I think Zac Efron would make a great Chris! Or Channing Tatum... although, he may be a tad too old and I don't know if he can hold note. Just please, God, not Justin Bieber!

Anna Kendrick for Ellen? She sounds pretty good in the clips from Pitch Perfect.
This would be a long shot, but what about Joseph Gordon-Levitt as John or Chris? He can sing and is very talented.

Please no actors that can "sing a little".
The role of Chris is very demanding vocally.

I think Amy Adams would make a great Ellen as far as the acting and type goes.
But although she can sing a little, I doubt that she is up to this material.
