They did institute an award for replacements, I think in 2005, but decided no one was worthy that year and eliminated it the following year.
I am beyond thrilled for him. I'm actually crying. I love him and the show so much. When I read the thread title, I thought this had to be a joke. This is amazing.
Ummm... Is there any chance he'll perform on the Tonys? That would be the bestest.

They should just implement it each year that they think it's appropriate.

^ Good idea. This season JCM would have been deserving, which is evidently why he's being recognized anyway.
I just did a Homer Simpson "Whoo-hoo!!" at work!!

And I would bet, with this announcement, that they'll be doing a number on the show.
How will you insure that a significant percentage of Tony voters return to see the replacement performance? What about other replacements that don't automatically have the cachet of JCM, who created the piece, directed and starred in the film, etc?
Back in the 1970s, Angela Lansbury took over for Constance Towers while Towers and Brynner were on vacation from THE KING AND I. For two weeks. Lansbury was brilliant, of course, but how many Tony voters could have seen her during her two-week run?
Just because replacements are sometimes sentimental favorites doesn't mean there's a fair way to administer a competitive category for them.
The special award to JCM is well deserved and an appropriate way to honor a very special "replacement" performance. IMO, obviously.
I am happy beyond control for this. Love you, JCM! Wish I was there to see him receive this news. His smile is heavenly.
Wonderful news! With JCM, Schwartz, and Tune getting honorary awards, I hope they receive stage/on-air tributes as well.

Not unless someone pays for said on-air time.

I'm with Wimington. If anyone should be getting a Tony for Hedwig, it's Phillip Bosco.
