And vote for whom? Aside from the fact that places run by Republicans aren't statistically safer than those run by Democrats, it's been impossible for decent people to vote for Republicans since at least 2004, when the party leveraged homophobia to ensure Bush's reelection.

Gentrification doesn't happen in a vacuum.

People are getting desperate.

The response of "Somebody's gotta do something about these people" we've created an insane class divide.

I'm absolutely empathetic to people who go through a traumatic experience like this cause no one should have to. It's horrible.

But this is not a city of villains in the shadows. It's the city becoming wealthier and wealthier and this is cause and effect.
"

What does the gentrification have to do withsevere underfunding of mental health and homeless services and constant releasing of recidivists back into public? It's extremely difficult to be working poor and live in this city, but the absolute majority of low income people don't walk around assaulting others. Working low income and lower middle class people are the most common victims of these crimes.
"

Umm, it’s all of that AND gentrification.

This is Washington Heights. Pull open Street Easy and see how much an apartment is there now.

people are getting desperate
"

Yeah sure high rents make people smash rocks over a random person’s head - you do realize most poor and I mean poor live in section 8 housing or low income designated housing - these things happen because city council members- state assembly members and even some state senators and judges favor criminals over victims and repeatedly let psychos out on the street - in other words pay attention to who you vote for

Cardoza's posts are worth preserving, since they're a lot kinder and more level-headed than much of what's spread since the media and Internet posters took his initial story and began spinning it.

Anyone who puts someone through an armed stick-up, no matter what they’re dealing with in their personal life, doesn’t deserve an ounce of kindness. After violent physical conduct against an innocent human you should be outraged.

I swear, some of you would take a bullet and say to your attacker “Oh it’s not your fault that you shot me, shoot me again if you need to, I don’t mind, you’d never hurt anyone I know it!”
The kindness & understanding approach IS the mental illness in this whole situation.

It's rather disappointing to read these comments from a group of people who are theatre-goers, people who post on here I would just assume are intelligent and empathetic. It's horrible to feel unsafe, I get it.  But to pooh-ppph the major reasons for this (I should say ONE reason, all the other reasons stem from the ONE--wealth inequality) is sad.  The wealthy do not care about poor, sick and desperate people.  They don't care about the middle class being robbed at gunpoint or attacked because Bellevue doesn't have the money or room for all the mentally handicapped people that pass through its doors. If foreign nationals are going to buy 40 million dollar investment penthouses across the city, tax them for keeping them empty!  If corporations are closing local businesses or tearing down local walk-ups to build towers, tax them!  We are so afraid of the rich, so afraid they'll take their money someplace else, we give them all kinds of concessions with barely a nod to the poor who need their own concessions doubled.  I know it's easy to blame crime on the "nasty people" who perpetrate it,and that wealth inequality and corporate welfare are possibly too abstract in reasoning to blame, but I would think people on these boards would get it.

To be completely accurate, the mugger indicated he had a gun but didn't display one. Cardoza was right to cooperate, but let's be clear:

https://www.nbcnewyork.com/news/local/broadway-actor-robbed-in-manhattan-before-performance-in-the-notebook/5279739/

"The NYPD confirmed the robbery telling NBC New York a man was buying food at the location when he was approached and asked for a dollar. Police said when the victim refused, the suspect "simulated a firearm in his pocket" and took the victim's wallet before leaving the location."

https://nypost.com/2024/04/01/us-news/actor-john-cardoza-robbed-by-panhandler-in-nyc-shop-second-broadway-star-to-become-crime-victim-in-a-day/

"The actor, who is appearing as Young Noah in “The Notebook,” was allegedly held up by a suspect who snatched a wallet with $9 inside after the beggar pretended to have a gun in his pocket in the Hamilton Heights coffee shop at around 1:45 p.m., according to cops and sources."

I have lived here for a decade. Never had an actual problem until this year, and now I’ve had three. The first being a homeless & unwell person, with a knife, at 34th St station while on my way to a presentation two weeks ago. Luckily other passengers stepped in where the police officer moved further down the train

I am big. It’s the REVIVALS that got small.

There is no Republican Party in the 5 boroughs - it is a joke and they do not even try - the ones that exist are not going after “ gays” turn off msnbc - what is more important is for Democrats to vote in the primaries- know who is running for city council - know who is running for judges - assembly- state senate- so the far left Democratic socialist endorsed candidates who favor criminals over victims are never elected again - nobody voted in the primaries and many only vote in the general- voting straight down ticket Democrat- when the damage was done already and the Democrat socialist won the primary already - look at who you vote for

No politicians, Democrat or Republican, have an answer to the rise in homelessness and the lack of affordable housing. It'll only get worse. Shelters are maxed out and people simply have nowhere to go. Mayor Eric Adams is useless. His GOP opposition for the election would have been worse. it was a lose-lose situation for the people of NYC. The GOP, in general, is happy this is happening because it fuels the fire to get #45 reelected.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

Huh? So real estate developers are why people join gangs and a two year old was shot in the Bronx during a gang fight on Saturday? Rich people are why a maniac pushed someone in front of a train ? Foreign investors are why a cop was murdered? Trust me as a working class  Bronx person - all the taxes in the world won’t stop these things - harsh punishment from judges will - it’s not rocket science

Comments on the BWW Instagram post about Stuhlbarg are more outraged that the attacker was called “homeless” than the fact the attack happened in the first place.

I’m now convinced that the mentality of “care for the criminal” is the true mental illness here.

Refute my post , prove that I’m wrong. Democrat socialist candidates endorse “ reformative justice “ meaning no jails, literally for anyone , example Tiffany Caban of Astoria, she holds city council position because nobody voted in the primary. Last spring when I was in the city for my pre-Tonys show lineup, I saw a 50s-60s y/o homeless(?) guy say "Hey pretty lil' thing!" to a girl who looked no older than six.

Crime is definitely up, and they're getting more brazen about it.
