As revealed in the wonderful new profile of him in the NYT.
No further details on the concert/recording, if that's happening in NY or London or somewhere else.

Was that planned, or rumored?

It is an unsubstantiated rumor that exists only on this board (an alleged Scott Rudin revival from pre-pandemic) which, especially now, is nothing more than a gay fantasia on national themes.
Can we set up a jar where people have to donate $5 every time they bring it up on this board?

Admit it. It would be an instantly legendary “I was there” moment. The gays would plotz.

This will be reminiscent of the 85 Follies concert. Casting for this will be very interesting - will they go for huge names/movie types, Broadway vets, opera stars...? Will they cast a 'singer' for Desirée? I wonder will it be a cross over like the original NYPhil Sweeney. Has Nathan Gunn every played Carl Magnus? He would be great opposite Laura Benanti as Charlotte. I would love a Denée Benton Anne or is it in her vocal range?

I would imagine this will be cast and performed as the template Tunick hopes for the future of this new adaptation for symphany orchestras. Wasn't there some discussion that Encores might be doing NIGHT MUSIC as a Gala production? That seems an appropriate place to premiere this. I would expect it might include a combination of talent from Broadway and opera. I'd imagine someone like Audra McDonald as Desiree before Cate Blancett, but who knows.

The recording probably stems from whoever commissioned the new orchestration, which in reality is probably close to the film orchestration, fitted to the stage material... 40-50 players (reed-doubling books broken up, 12-30 violins, etc), instead of the ~25-piece theatre orchestration. Someplace like Encores uses a standard theatre orchestration for its shows, akin to what was at the Shubert in 1973, I think the largest ensemble they've had was 36 for Most Happy Fella. John Wilson likes playing from R&H film charts when possible, because those parts are more dynamic for a BIG orchestra.
Hopefully we'll get a press release soon, as I imagine Tunick spilled the beans on this earlier than was intended.

I’ll be surprised if this is anywhere other than Lincoln Center.

I remember when Théâtre du Châtelet did Sunday they pumped up the orchestra to somewhere around 40 players. Does anyone remember if they did the same when they did Night Music?

I don't know what they did for ALNM, but Michael Starobin specifically reorchestrated SUNDAY for the Châtelet because the existing orchestration is for a chamber ensemble of 11 players. So that's harder to expand than something like ALNM or FOLLIES, where you can just add strings to fill it out.
