I thought the color of the wig was because of the color scheme of the production. The black fits the black/white/red color scheme of the production very well.

Is that picture from the London production? Very different costumes.

What's funny is that, in the play, Tobias has the line (when he finds the hair in the meat from the grinder) about the hair being "black as a rook" so it couldn't possibly be Mrs. Lovett's...I think he says something along the lines of it belonging to an "old black cow."

Yes - they were.

Well CTY, the Lovett onstage isn't really her, it is the patient portraying her from the story Toby tells and performs or is thinking back on.

True C is for Company. Very confusing, but true. But the black hair does help her look more menacing. Lauren Molina has blonde hair, so if Lovett had it too, I think it would make her look more innocent.

A lot of it is kind of contrasting when you think about it. That pure white dress and golden hair with Lauren as opposed to the dark blacks Lovett wears. I mean you really don't need the colors or any subtleties to figure out who is good and bad, but I think it was proper of them to do so.

I agree C is for Company. It's nice to look at though. I love the starkness and blankess of it all.

In this minimalist sense, it is stripped down to the core of these characters. And it is all laid out right before the audience to see in such a grim setting. How could this production NOT embody the heart of Sweeney Todd re: Judy in Sweeney Pics?

I love seeing any pictures of this show, to see Patti with that bleak look on her face as she wields the triangle or Lauren hunched over the Cello with her "yellow" hair, etc. It just brings such a rush to me.

I loved it too. I went home to my mom and told her why I loved this production so much. It isn't flashy or "big" - which I don't mind. But to me it was the essecene of what Broadway is about - the best. It is the best of the theater world. It is a great production of a great show with one of the best ensemble casts. It is what Broadway should be about, the story, the music, the singing, the beautiful acting. Whenever I listen to the Cast Recording, I just imagine Lauren leaning over that cello and tears streaming down her face as Sweeney is singing. Uck, I love it. Lauren Molina you are my goddess!

Like many have said, this production isn't for everyone. Some people maintain that it needs to have elaborate sets or like seeing a traditional musical. But for those people how can you expect to see different things that offer up extraordinary performances like this one? This is a broadway show that just strips away the glamour and leaves 10 people to sing, act, and play an epic. And that is what it becomes, a true epic with nothing but visible talent for all to see behind no facades. And I challenge any who find this a "gimmick". It is the expression through another form in which you can act AND play out the emotions of a character with an instrument.
Lauren is one of my most favorite parts of the production. She is a total sweetheart, no fake exterior, just a classy and hip individual. Her talents are perfectly showcased in Sweeney and the cast just interacts perfectly with each other. I plan on going back a 6th time when Patti comes back and another after that when Judy assumes the role for August.

Yeah, I wished I lived in NYC (and I will in two years) so that I could see all the different understudies and standbys in the various roles.

I agree, this show isn't for everyone. The women sitting next to me, turned to her husband and said, "what was that about?" at the end of the show. I'd like to think i have a wide range of tastes, I saw Sweeney and Wedding Singer in the same trip and I loved them both. I thought the instrument thing would be distracting at first, but it wasn't at all. It just sort of becomes part of the actors and the characters. It was just a beautiful production. I was really impressd by Doyle's staging and what he could do with so little. I wish I had seen this show on a thrust stage. I could tell that's how the set was designed.

I think Broadway, Ldn, Watermill & UK Tour Mrs. Lovetts have different costumes. The one in UK Tour did not wear a dress thru out the show, she just wore blakc trousers with a jacket which worked fine I think. But the watermill version was the best.

You know, she doesn't look as bad as I thought. It's too bad we can't have Patti stay forever. She's just so amazing. I wasn't really worried about how Judy would look though. I'm more concerned if she can pull off the comedic timing as well as Patti.

Judy looks like a drag queen on the photos.

I always thought this was a spooky look for a Mrs. Lovett. Judith Christin in the Lyric Oprea of Chicago production.

She looks a lot more like Karen Mann did in the part in London. And honey, Patti looks like a drag queen in that get up too.

I think Judy looks great too. I don't love the Louise Brooks bob they have Patti wearing. Judy looks intimidating.

Yes, I don't know what people mean that she isn't scary enough. She actually looks frightening to me - like a nurse from hell - I'm sure she'll be great

It's also hard to judge from a picture. Judy Kaye is such a capable actress that I'm sure she will create a creepy aura of the character that will go hand in hand with her physical appearance.

I was there Tuesday night. Judy at first seemed a bit understandably tentative, but settled in to the proceedings nicely. Her Lovett is interesting, not as sly, menacing and sensual as LuPone can be, but not totally comedic and manic, in the Lansbury style. There was a middle ground. Her singing is very operatic, which was new to me, having seen the show 3 times already. Great comic timing too. She brings to the role a unique presence, kinda hard to describe. I went specifically to see her in the role, and was pleased.

She is a great talent, don't get me wrong, but doesn't galvanize like Patti, so this left my eye and mind at times to enjoy some other aspects of the show, some really cool subtle directing moves that I missed before, and really enjoying Manny. Also, the piece itself was particularly engrossing last night, and I was moved by the story more than in past visits.

It remains such a great piece of theater, robbed...ROBBED I say of the Tony for best Revival! Great job Miss Kaye, can't wait to see you in L.A. in Souvineer

PS...very classy that they have a "new" Playbill printed up with Judy in it, not just a paper stuffed inside with pic and bio.
