Is this recording worth purchasing ? I've never listened to it or Julie Covington. Also is it different from the other recordings of Evita ?
Yes. Yes.
Thanks, I'll purchase it tomorrow. Btw how is it different from the other recordings ?
It's a completely different sound, and there are a few songs on that album that were cut for the stage productions. It's definitely worth at least a listen if you're an Evita fan.
Definitely, definitely DEFINITELY get this recording.
I became a huge Julie Covington fan after hearing her take on "Evita," which is quite interesting. She can be incredibly soft and innocent, almost charming, and then when she needs to be, incredibly ruthless. All of this is conveyed through merely a concept album recording, mind you. She REALLY had the role down. Pity she wouldn't play it on stage.
As an added bonus, you get a great performance from Colm Wilkinson as Che, and a heartbreaking recording of "Another Suitcase in Another Hall" by Barbara Dickson.
Let us know what you think after you hear it!
sbflyfan and alex you guys should be friends on facebook! I just sent you a friends suggestion. You are both Sarah B fans too! LOL
It's a very interesting recording and definitely worth having for the performances and alternate take on some of the material. A peculiar oddity is The Lady's Got Potential which was cut for the stage production, but reinstated in the film with new lyrics. I never really understood the insecticide subplot for Che.
"Kapow! Die! They don't stand a chance.
In the fly-killing world, it's a major advance.
In my world, it'll mean finance."
My one gripe is Covington's mispronunciation of "descamisados." She says "DEY-camisados," which as a native Spanish speaker is like nails on a chalkboard. Don't know why nobody bothered to correct her since elsewhere (during "Santa Evita") the chorus pronounces it right.
Heyyy StageManager2, how have you been ?
Well I purchased the recording earlier and really like the voice of Julie Covington, the way she sings Don't cry for me argentina, is very good and not over the top, like Elaine Paige sings it. The only thing I really don't like about the recording is Colm Wilkinson. After listening to the recording I googled Julie Covington and couldn't find very much information on her.

You should look up Rock Follies on YouTube, it was a miniseries from the 70s that I saw on PBS when it was first run. I just looked on there and it seemed there were at least clips of the songs. Julie Covington was one of the 3 main stars (along with Rula Lenska! ha ha) She was Dee, the pixie-ish looking girl with short black hair. There was a follow up, Rock Follies 77 that I really loved because Tim Curry played a spoiled rock star in it. Scandalous that these shows aren't on DVD (yet every crappy reality show IS)
THANK YOU! Finally, someone else has come forward about the "KAPOW! DIE!" business. I was big into this recording when I was about 10, so there were lots of things in shows that went over my head and I just assumed it was stuff that I would understand later and enjoyed what I did get out of things at the time. But, it is very gratifying to know that business made no sense to anyone else either. Now I don't feel bad for still not know what the hell it means.
Thank goodness Hal Prince had the presence to cut the subplot about Che Guevara's insecticide research. It was shoe-horned into one stanza of one song and made no sense to anyone. I am glad the song was re-purposed into the film, though, as I think the tune/tempo/feel of the song is fantastic.
This was the first Evita recording I got my hands on years ago and I give it a thumbs up!
I haven't listened to the recording in a while -- doesn't the insecticide come up again later on at some point, right before a quick reprise of "Good Night and Thank You"?
