Manual Puig's 1983 play, KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN, based on his 1976 book, and the basis for Kander and Ebb's musical adaptation, will arrive on Broadway in the fall.
The 2-character play (translated by Allan Baker and directed by Peter DuBois) will be making it's NY debut, following 2 successful stagings in London.

Dang! I got all a-twitter thinking that the Signature production was gonna get the transfer it deserved!
The play isn't bad though...I used it for a paper in a comparative lit class back in college. Oh well...

I've never read the play, but am curious to hear more about it and the casting.
I loved both the movie and musical...I'd see a straight play version.

I thought the production from the Signature as well.
Oh well, still happy the play is coming.

This is April Fools day all over again. Yankee, change your title, although I know you're up there in New York laughing your f*cking ass off at this, your most cruel post-joke.
But this is kind of exciting. It's nice to see new productions of older adaptations.

I've never seen the play live, but have read the book and the play, seen the movie, and actually directed a production of the musical.
I actually had a fantasy when I directed it of ALSO doing the play with the same lead actors.

It needs to be made as a movie musical. Then the story would join MAME as something that has been made into a
BOOK
PLAY
FILM
MUSICAL
AND
MUSICAL FILM.

So...shall we talk casting? I would like to see a Latino cast do this.
Interesting trivia: Burt Lancaster tried for years to make this into a movie. He wanted to play Molina.

Burt Lancaster would have been... a geriatric Molina.
Interesting factoid.

What a pity they'll be using the Baker translation. It's painfully dry and sounds very British-- in one scene, Valentin says, "That's romantic eyewash. You're daft." Yeah, real macho Argentinian. If they're going to spend the bucks on a new production, I wish they'd get a fresh new translation. Maybe Feingold's? I hear that one is much grittier...
As for casting, I've wanted to see Denis O'Hare and Raul Esparza do this show for years. (Tho' Raul will probably be old enough to play Molina soon enough.)
"Well, maybe they should."

Posted: 5/1/08 at 12:03pmOh, yes, and as for Burt Lancaster-- there's an early draft of the screenplay available online somewhere that was written when Lancaster was slated to play Molina (and Richard Gere as Valentin!). It's very different from the final screenplay, and re-imagines Molina as an ex-pat 59-year-old American. Rather strange.

i literally choked on my coffee I got so excited. I'm still glad the play is coming, but part of me wonders if this will make it harder to get the musical back on Broadway in the near future

I read this on playbill.com and gasped when I read the KISS OF THE SPIDER WOMAN part...then I read non-musical
How many characters are in this play? Does anyone know by any chance?
Raul Esparza is more appropriate for Valentin than for Molina, I think. But I don't wanna see any musical theater actor in this play...all the time I'll be thinking that they could start singing "The Day After That," "Dressing Them Up," "Anything for Him" or some other wonderful Kander/Ebb tune.

Heh-- too true! But they would be terrific, wouldn't they?
I keep thinking Neil Patrick Harris would make an ideal Molina , either in the musical or play...

Posted: 5/1/08 at 2:30pmOnly two characters in the play - Valentin and Molina. Some voice overs too, if I recall correctly, but only two actors.

Hmm... if only for tradition's sake... Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick?
Kidding! Kidding! Stop throwing things at me!
