the subject matter will keep the schools from going, most high schools would say no to this subject matter. good luck it looks like a tough sell
i'm way too nervous for the grosses to come out!
Spring Awakening was sold out and selling SRO last night. Doesnt sound like a struggling show to me...

really? i'll help!! XD
i saw it the other day and i loved it! plus it was a huge crowd!
Just the mere fact alone that this string even exists tells you the show is in trouble. With all the raves, it still is having trouble finding an audience. Doesn't matter that it might be sold out last week and this week ... these are the 2 busiest weeks of the theatre season. However, geting thru the winter slump is going to be very difficult. And, like someone else said, school groups will not be buying tickets ... many parents / PTA associations will find in "inappropriate". And forget the tourists from the Bible Belt, and those who love the Disney shows. SA has a very limited appeal, and the appeal is primiarily to those who are buying stage seats, standing room and discount tickets. I, for one, think it is way over-hyped, and glad that I only spent TDF prices. I would never spend full price on SA, nor would I recommend anyone to.
Yeah, all that matters about a show is if school groups will buy.

Those few downers who hate the show are attempting to keep the worries alive just to irritate the rest of us who care about SA. Spring's buzz is growing daily and January and February advance sales are doing very well. Those producing this show have the patience to nurture it along as it takes root. And it will flourish. Enough negative vibes! If you don't like the show, don't go. I didn't enjoy Grey Gardens- but I don't begrudge or disparage its cast or audience. There's room for lots of different tastes.

I'm agreeing with you on that. It bothers me if someone were to review Grey Gardens and enjoy the show and, then someone would go in there and say they thought the show was terrible. When SA's reviews came out and people were happy because of all the positive reviews. Then someone has to come and and say that good reviews don't guarantee a long run. Then the person started bringing up Side Show and Passion as an example. That make me mad when people do that type of thing.

I hope it stays open...but im skeptical....I want to buy tickets for March....Its now Dec 27, and I cant buy tickets for early March, as they have yet to open up a new block...seems weird to me

I bought seats for March 4th last weekend. That's early March.
I thought their ticket block was through March. Correct me if I'm wrong.

March 4th is the last date on telecharge.com
Quite a few people on this thread have mentioned that the advertising needs to be stepped up. TV appearances will begin in January. Or that's what Jonathan Groff's Mom told me. She happens to teach at my school. (the high school that jon went to in fact :) ) So just sit tight. I think it's all just beginning. Great things will happen once that starts.

Confirming the 4th....I needed and tried to buy the 5th..Just seems weird you can only buy about 60 days out...isnt that what happens when producers dont want to get involved in a lot of refunds?
Id buy tickets earlier if I was going to be there earlier. I m a supporter just not getting a good feeling with this approach.

Becoz_I_Knew_You--POsters were being realistic, for the most part, not mean. The fact is good reviews aren't everything and bad reviews aren't everything. IN fact, I think that you ould prefer people saying that more work needs to be done and not to coast on good reviews...that is what will keep the show open, not allowing the producers to rest on its laurels thanks to the reviews.
Does anyone else love how we hate critics when they disagree with us but love them when they agree with us?
i*heart*fame I know things people were saying was realistic. It was just when the reviews came out people were happy and then someone says something as I described. It just bothered me that someone would do that when people were happy that the reviews were so positive.

That's awesome!
Absolutely packed house today, and I believe it sold out for tonight as well.

2 million won't do it for a show like this. 10 million would probably be better in order for the show to have longevity.

Oh, God, please let the buzz keep growing. Don't throw in the towel yet, you guys.

my friend who is at the show right now text me and said that some people around her and the ushers are saying it is sold out tonight again! i really hope it keeps going! slowly but surely!
Can't she just turn around?
It's definitely suspicious that even with all the opening press and the great reviews that sales aren't extending farther than basically two months from now. There's got to be a reason for that.
While I loved the music and the set design, I was very lukewarm on the show. The book was all over the place, and some of the acting was flat out bad. When I went lots of people were laughing when they weren't supposed to.
I think the problem is that there's nothing about the show that makes people need to see it. What's going to make people shell out $111.25 and keep it open in February or August? Student rushes, standing room, onstage, and other discounts keep a show open, but only so far.
I hope it does well though. I'm all for seeing original things on Broadway, even though I didn't care for it.
Not to be a dick or anything, but everything jumps up during the week between Christmas and New Year's. For a point of comparison, take a look at last year's grosses, with every show leaping up 10-20-30+ percent in grosses, and then falling down again for the week after New Year's. The streets in Times Square are currently mobbed with tourists, but they'll all leave on Tuesday.
Grosses - Week ending 1/1/06
Thank you Smaxie.
you're not a dick, smaxie, that's just the truth. But another truism is that the week BEFORE Christmas is usually a weaker session, and with reports that SA sold out perfs last week while some other shows dipped (Variety reported that Company fell $150,000), well, I take it as a sign that Spring Awakening is a show that people are paying to see.
