Jimmirae, I highly doubt Donna Murphy, Jane Krakowski, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Bebe Neuwirth, Vanessa Williams, or any other star that we could come up with could ever top Chita Rivera. I am only 19 so I was only about 6 years old when this show opened so I never got the chance to see it. However, being a follower of Chita's greatest performances, Aurora/Spider Woman is arguably Chita's Mamma Rose. But just like Mamma Rose has been played by different actresses that have provided different sides to the role, I believe Aurora/Spider Woman could be played in a completely different way by an actress who didn't try to immitate or top Chita but who tried to bring up new things to the role and take it into another direction. Natasha Richardson and Alan Cumming did it with Cabaret, Bernadette Peters, Angela Lansbury, and Tyne Daly have done it with Gypsy, Murphy and Brooke Shields it with Wonderful Town, more recently LuPone did it with Sweeney. Well-written roles (I hold my opinion that this is Kander & Ebb's masterpiece, although Chicago is my fav. show) have many ways to be presented, if a director could take this show in a complete different direction than the original production and still make it work, then the new Spider Woman could come out behind the shadow of Chita's rendition without trying to top it. Do I make any sense?
