I don't think Kristin is over-rated at all. The only thing that bothers me about her raves is the fact that people (in the case of Wicked) tend to praise her to the high heavens and fail to mention the wonders done by Idina in the show. I think she's worthy of all the highest praising she gets, but I do not feel she out-shines Idina, as many seem to suggest.
i had a friend who was thinking about working on wicked way back when it was being workshopped. this friend gave me the cd and asked what i thought. i said, "well, the show's gonna be a big family hit, so if you can stand months of listening to that annoying ass helium voice, knock yourself out. you'll be working for a few years." sorry, i just can't get past it. it's like nails on a chalkboard.
I love Kristin, and think she's a very singular and special talent, but for her next role she needs to do something romantic, with an awakening of love and hearbreak. I think she'd make a great Nellie Forbush. Her biggest sucesses (WICKED and CHARLIE BROWN) have been in sexless roles. And in THE MUSIC MAN, she had no chemistry at all with Matthew Broderick.

Trust me, people rave about Idina. So please, don't say that again! If noone raves about her, than you guys do it lol. Idina AND Kristen are amazing!
BwayTheatre11, have you been reading your reviews and listening to word of mouth? People say some great things about Idina, but the majority is raving and raving about Kristin and pretty much saying "Well, Idina was great. She's got a pwerful voice" and moving on, as if her performance was barely worth mentioning.
I really don't think Kristin is overrated at all. I think she is amazingly talented and take every chance I get to see her perform.
A friend and I drove 3 hours with the threat of a huge blizzard to see her perform Valentine's Weekend in DC.
Another time, my friend and I literally baked on the Capitol lawn on Fourth of July to see her sing two sings (and it was totally worth it). SO obviously I enjoy her immensely.
What is interesting is, that now that I have the Wicked CD I canNOT stop raving about how good Idina is. Don't get me wrong, the best is when Kristin and Idina sing together. But I think Idina has SO much talent, I tear up every time I hear her sing.
I think that the spotlight just shifts from person to person, not that any one person is necessarily better. We can't easily gush over everyone at once. :)

Please don't tell me you actually listen to the critics?? If all of these people think she AMAZING, then she is amazing.

She's marvelous! Just watch Disney's Annie. Can't wait to see her in Wicked. Just 19 more weeks to go!
i think she is ok..but little depth
I'm right with ya, Sparky!
She has a remarkable range (even if I don't particularly like her tone) and expert comic timing.
However, I find her emotional reserve a little shallow. The one time I saw her attempt a deeper emotional connection to a role, I didn't buy it.
Thank you Robbie. Heaven forbid, I made that comment, it would be a national incident.Apparantly, if we don't all worship at the altar of La ultra petite Chenoweth,it must be due to seething jealousy and unrivaled bitterness. It couldn't possibly be a case of simply stating the obvious. Imo she is indeed, a bit overrated by the *theater* community. The only community that is aware of her presence. Well, Al as I always say there is an alternate way that you can express yourself. Reading your first post, one would assume that you were angry or had some "issues" at/with Chenowith for some reason. Your tone, "the overrated blonde" does not seem to have any depth or express why you might not think she is the second coming. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, but when you're on a message board where the only thing people have to go by is words on a screen, you have to be very specific in posting your opinions and intentions. So with that said, you should have expected some backlash. Not to compare you to Robbie, but if you felt the way he did, you sure didn't express it the way he did, and others, including myself didn't see your comments for anything other than "bashing" Ms.Chenoweth.
Granted I am not an obsessed fan of hers, but I do think that she is a brilliant and talented performer, who by no means is overrated. Like a past acting teacher told me.... Actors all fall into types whether they want to believe it or not. Kristin is a smart actress. She knows her type and what sells her, therefore she is going to sell herself and excell in what she does best. That's how I look at your claims of "being overrated". If that is the case, the Bernadette Peters along with other performers at her level would have been labeled "overrated" early in their careers.
Kristin might be known pretty well in the Theatre community, but that doesn't mean that everyone knows her. She's just doing, I think, what needs to be done to get her even more recognition, and when she has the level of stardom to pick and choose what she does and take risks, then I can assure you that we would probably see more and alternate sides to her, other that "quirky, bubbly, comic, big-voiced little Kristin" Hell, she even plays various emotions in Wicked, and damned well too.
Just my 2 cents.

there
they're
their
They mean different things. Does anyone know which one to use?
Kristin is very talented. She was wonderful in Wicked, Encore's,
Charlie Brown.
I love that she has such a range in talent. In Encores she went from an Opera style piece to a Broadway piece and sang both to perfection.
She has quite a range which is very unusual. She has what it takes and she is gorgeous.
Maybe people are jealous. I know I am.

i would agree to some extent with what you are saying in terms of projecting picking and risk taking..however..i believe at this point we would have caught some glimpse of her depth as an actress by now..however i've been know to be wrong 2 or 3 thousand times......today...in the last hour..but i digress.i hope she has more ..but am skeptical but fair
Mister Matt, do you have serious concern on which to use, or are you making a snide remark about my grammar? Because I can assure that mine is correct.
"Their" is used to refer possession gramatically.
"There" is used to refer to location.
"They're" is a contraction used to abbreviate "they are" which represents/describes the action of a particular plural subject or subjects.

LOL How did Kristin Chenoweth evolve into a thread about grammatical pet peeves? But I must join the fray, I must.
I cringgggge at mis-placed apostrophes -- especially when the apostophe is supposed to indicate plurality. For example, if you have a plethora of advanced business degrees, you don't have a bunch of MBA's. You have MBAs. Learn it, live it, love it.
And I'm not speaking to anyone on this board, naturally -- just in general to all of God's children.
your all a teensy weensy bit two serious about grammer for me here on this site. their are way to many things in this thread alone to get up in arms about without having to bring grammur into it. iv'e got too say that such adherence two the rules of some ancient style book and demanding that others do it to is just over the top. its all two, to extreme really. so why dont we all just take a deep breathe and see if we cant' try to get along even though some of us take great pride in butchering grammatical constructs? anyway, thats where i'am at.

She makes my flesh crawl.....
Shirley Temple with the pipes of a sub-par Gloria Jean
I pity what she'll do to the music of Candide....oh yes, she has the notes to sing it.....
just not the heart...
...nor will she have the conception that it's an ensemble show ....
..not a show built around "Glitter and be gay"...
I hope LuPone makes that real clear to her.....
Updated On: 12/23/03 at 01:11 PM
Didn't see her behave that way in A New Brain. She worked well with the ensemble as a whole.
I would not say that Candide is an ensemble show - it is obvious that the leads are Candide and Cunegonde, and the show's biggest aria is "Glitter and Be Gay" I wouldn't think that the show builds up to, or a major turning point of the piece is "I Am Easily Assimilated".
Furthermore, I would scoff at Patti LuPone reminding anyone about working together as an ensemble, and not thinking the show is only about her.....SHE is NOTORIOUS for diva-ish behavior.

People, for grammer lesson, BB, you are correct, please ask DP. He is an English teacher after all.
I think Kristin is very talented, has a beautiful voice and was very funny in Wicked.
Her and Idina should both get an oscar.
Until the film version is released, I think they'll both settle for Tonys.
Like most actors, Kristen comes across beautifully when cast in a suitable role. I certainly couldn't see her as an Evita or Mama Rose, but I do think she is extremely talented. My only concern is that she'll now be overused. She is getting tons of offers. I'm all for talent, but there's more than one talented actress out there.
WOW, how DARE any of you try to correct someone's grammAr when you can't even spell the word yourself.
As for Kristin, she's not just a great comedianne with great vocal chords. She takes on serious material just fine, and in all her serious moments in Wicked, she captured our hearts. Or at least mine.
