For those of you that have seen Wicked, I got the soundtrack. I heard Kristin Chenoweth, when I saw it, I saw and heard Jennifer Laura Thompson.
Kristin C. is a good singer, but not a good G(a)linda. G(a)linda (hereafter referred to as Galinda) is supposed to be a dumb blonde, right? J. L. T. is much better at doing that.
JLT is a good singer and a dumb blonde, and therefore better (in my opinion) as Galinda. In B'way, you need to be able to sing and act. JLT mastered both of those things. Did Kristin? No.
Your thoughts?

Although I never saw Kristin in the role, I think she sounds amazing on the cast recording.
If we are talking about personal preferences though, I prefer J-La to Cheno.

hmm my thoughts.
I heard JLT was really great but I'm gonna have to go to Kristin just because I've loved her since her YAGMCB days.
Please note I am not bashing or gushing deeply about Jennifer and Kristin. Juuust had to clear that up.
forgive me for this gush though: I LOVE KC!!!!!!!!

Posted: 12/19/04 at 8:19pmJennifer is giving an excellent performance, and I give her so much credit. There is not a bit of Kristin in her deliveries at all, she is completely original.

The only thing I like about Wicked is Kristin Chenoweth. I feel the show itself is so-so, but I saw it 4 times because I'm a Kristin Chenoweth fan from way back. I have no reason to go see it again now that she's gone, so I can't comment on JLT. I saw her in Urinetown and liked her, but wasn't overly impressed.
But - I don't see how you could possibly judge Kristin's ability to play a... er, "dumb blonde" versus JLT's when you haven't seen Kristin. That's a nearly impossible thing to judge from a cast recording.
I also protest against your shoving Glinda into a box labeled "dumb blonde" and leaving it at that, but that's another matter entirely.

Kristin is by far the stronger singer but I love seeing JLT on stage. She is a lot of fun to watch and extremely funny. Kristin occasionally played to the audience too much, for example the winking etc at the audience didn't work for me.
Both are/were excellent in their own ways.

Posted: 12/19/04 at 8:27pmWell, I haven't seen JLT so I can't judge who was BETTER but saying that Kristin cannot act is a bit harsh, don't you think? Perhaps JLT is better than Kristin in the roll, but I definitely think that Kristin was wonderful with both acting and singing. Her comic timing was perfect and she really made the audience love her and laugh. So that's my 2cents.

Posted: 12/19/04 at 8:30pmjust a note -- there is a HUGE difference between acting ability and comic timing.

Posted: 12/19/04 at 8:30pmI love KC. Although I do agree that she plays all of her characters relativley similar, which shows she doesnt have versatility, or she just doesn't use it. But she's still immensly talented.

#16re: Kristin Chenoweth vs. J. L. Thompson
Posted: 12/19/04 at 8:33pmI guess so BG2, but can anyone really say that she wasn't good in her part as Galinda? Okay I guess people could, but I dunno, I think she's great. Comedy is fun, nothing wrong with sticking to her comedy. But I would also liek to point out that there were dramatic scenes in Wicked in which she did fine. And she does say in an interview that people are surprised when she shows her dramatic side. But she can. At least I think so.

True, there is a difference, but I do think she can act. I haven't seen her in much, but what I have seen her in she was very good. Maybe she is only good at one type of acting, but it is still acting. Anyway, I'm kind of getting off-topic about the actual post question, which I can't answer anyway, so I'll just kindly see my way out.
And unless I'm intrepreting the original post wrong, can you really answer your own question having only heard Kristin on the recording?
Now look what I've done to myself, I made myself look like a crazed teenybopper.

I feel it's rather short-sighted to say she's good at playing one character, and then citing a total of two (Sally and Glinda, while being remarkably similar if you think in one-dimensional planes of "cute" "silly" and "blonde", are quite obviously, in comparison, a case of character vs. caricature). Anyone who saw her in Epic Proportions and still feels she can only play one character is... odd.
I think she's such a huge presence. She had such a small part in A New Brain, yet I somehow left the theatre back in 1998 saying, "I like that Kristin Chenoweth girl."

I only saw Kristen so I can't say anything about JLT and I heard she is GREAT, but Kristen was perfect when I saw her.
Every Note
Every Line
Every Tear.
PERFECT!
This might have been because it was her second to last show but she was
PERFECT!

Posted: 12/19/04 at 9:04pmwicked4life, calm youself. I have seen both twice and I very much prefer JLT because she just ACTED the role better. All her comedy and every move she made was right in line with her character choices, while on the other hand, Kristin didn't seem to do so. She just did her comedy thing. She's damn good at it, but she's just not the actress that Jennifer Laura is.
