Are there still plans to bring the show to New York? After the Melbourne production possibly?
The show has it's faults, but I'd still like to see it live. The music is breathtaking.

Posted: 5/21/11 at 2:06pmI think that plan is for it to be very successful in Australia, then go on to Toronto, then Broadway, possibly with some of the original cast.

If and when it does come to Broadway, I sure hope that Sierra Boggess will play the female lead!
Also, does anybody know if the West End production is an open-ended run?

Kyl3 - the London production is "open-ended" with tickets on sale through January 2012.
I'm not sure how things have changed in terms of contracts, etc. but initially I think Sierra and Ramin were signed/promised for a Broadway prodcution.

Posted: 5/21/11 at 4:45pmI'm sure there'll be a Broadway announcement once the Melbourne production is officially opened. I agree with the poster above... it should run a couple months in Toronto first and then transfer to Broadway. Ramin and Sierra certainly have first dibs but its up to them whether or not they take the roles again.

For whatever it's worth, we thought the London production we saw last Christmas was one of those real WHY musicals as Arthur Laurents would have put it (just before he would have let loose with much bitchier comments).
LND was a show devoted to the build-up of one single song in Act II (the Phantom's long-intended come-back song for Christine to sing). The rest of the show was pure padding till we got to the song and then the song itself made no sense lyrically and left absolutely no impression musically. Can't even begin to tell you how the tune went, which is shocking for Lloyd Weber. Perfectly swell cast and ridiculously over-the-top sets were the only real entertainment we got out of the evening. WHY do it in the first place? WHY spend the money to have it be killed by the NY critics? I'd rather see a revival of "Aspects of Love" or even "Whistle on the Wind" if ALW wants to put his stamp back on Broadway.

Yes, Laurents would have hated the show. He said time and time again that no matter how good the score is, if the book is bad, then you have no show. To me this sums up Love Never Dies very accurately.
As for the 'come back' song, I think it's a very pretty melody and find myself humming it often (or at least a variation of it, if not the disturbingly similar-sounding theme from The Apartment), but for me it fails on three counts: a) the fact that the title song for ALW's 'come back' show is recycled; I can't mentally dissociate it from The Beautiful Game; b) though undeniably pretty, I don't think it's something the Phantom would write; it is the sort of tune he would mock -- where is the avant-garde Phantom who wrote in dissonant whole-tone scales as in Phantom? Did he lose his talent as well as his love in the intermittent 10 years?; and c) those...lyrics. Not the worst in the show, but it's got about every cliché in the book... And who puts in the word "infiltrates" into a love song?
I wonder if Jack O'Brien can and will prevent this show from going to Broadway as he told a UK newspaper recently.

Is this true? More importantly, can he actually do this? Is there justification?

#18LOVE NEVER DIES NY Transfer?
Posted: 5/23/11 at 9:33amI still am very certain that the show would actually do well if they threw out all talk of Phantom and just turned it into a love triangle... It would be a great show. But alas they must do "phantom 2"
