Unless you are going to offer patrons refunds because the star is performing while ill, what is the point of making such an announcement other than to put the audience on edge, massage the ego of the star, and call attention to yourself so you can, what, earn brownie points.
I think it was just to prepare the audience. She does have a reputation to uphold. If a lung comes flying out into the orchestra, people need to know its not her best so they can't make a definitive judgement. But I do agree with other members that if they made an announcement for Ms. LuPone, they should have done the same for Ms. Benanti. Then again... it IS "Patti LuPone Gypsy", so... :)
Mutts2, my feelings exactly. The audience doesn't need to be informed about how you're feeling before you come on stage. I feel like it is definitely an ego stroking tactic for the star. In what job does anyone get to say they're not feeling up to par before executing what it is they do?? We get up, go to work and perform our duties to the best of our abilities and people create their opinions on how we did. Sometimes, we're not feeling 100% and we have to call in sick. Sometimes we just push through. We're human...even Miss Lupone. If she was able to do the show, then there was no need to announce that she was ill. I would have thought of nothing else if I had heard the star was not well at the performance I attended.
