I've performed when I was so sick that I barely made it out of bed, but I didn't feel the need to announce it to the world (until now).
And how many people in the audience came to specifically see you in the show? I'm not trying to sound nasty, but this is Patti's show. If she doesn't feel well but she's still performing, at least audience are prepared to see performance that won't be at her best.

Obviously, you can't please everyone. Whether it was Patti or the producers who decided on the announcement, I wouldn't have minded. I'm sure Miss Patti wanted to make sure the audience knew beforehand that she was not at her best, because of her indisposition. She is well aware that people expect a lot out of her performance. When it comes to matters of health, Miss LuPone is a mere mortal, just like the rest of us. She could've requested that her understudy/standby go on, but she didn't. Brava!! Someone in this board made a comment about not making an announcement about being sick. Then, again, that poster is NOT the great Patti LuPone. hello... goodbye... from RC in Austin, Texas
"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)
I’ve also heard that Benanti was under the weather and she didn’t get an announcement... but really that is neither here nor there. If it’s true that she isn’t feeling well I’m even more impressed that she went on. I mean OF COURSE Patti’s going to go on. This is HER show it would take a silver bullet to keep her off the stage, but Benanti despite her reviews is really second fiddle in this show and I would think she would be more inclined to call out. Of course it is possible that she is trying to combat her reputation for absences, and therefore is leery of missing shows.

I was at the matinee and frankly, I wish they didn't make the announcement because I spent a good amount of the show thinking "I wonder if this would be better if she weren't sick". It just started the show out on the wrong foot for me. But she still sounded fine and still gave it everything she could and I'm glad she still performed, I just wish they hadn't announced anything.
On a related note, I actually liked Bernadette Peters more.
Well, looks like Bernadette isn't the only one coughing now......let's hope the NEXT revival of Gypsy we can all talk to no end about Patti hacking her way through Some People......

^ does this belong in unpopular opinions you hold? :P

I couldn't understand a word Bernadette was saying between clearing her throat and all the coughing. And her mannerisms were so annoying. Let me also remind you that Bernadette's production was a flop. It is the only big production of Gypsy to have been a flop. Ethel, Angela, and Tyne.. all big hits. And from the looks of it.. so is Lupones. Bernadette's.. a flop.
"It's truly a shame that people can't discuss Patti's performance without trashing Bernadette's."
ARE YOU SERIOUS?! Because every time I read a "Gypsy" thread, I have to scroll through various comments about how much better Bernadette was. I think it's "truly a shame that people can't discuss Patti's performance without trashing" Patti's for Bernadette's. Updated On: 4/7/08 at 12:36 PM
Seeing Bernadette in GYPSY remains one of the most thrilling theatrical experiences of my life. I haven't seen Patti yet, but I can't wait to see her this summer.

I was at the performance, and I'm glad they said something in retrospect, though at the time the announcement was made, I thought it was jarring. It truly was hilarious to hear the collective gasp and murmuring in the audience, and the sigh of relief when it was clear she would still be going on. I thought she did a terrific job.
I think it's funny to see the back and forth on here between the lovers and the haters. Didn't PL herself refer to the fact that people either love her or hate her during her guest starring appearance on an episode of Will and Grace?
"Seeing Bernadette in GYPSY remains one of the most thrilling theatrical experiences of my life."
Agreed. I very much enjoyed her performance as Rose.
As for loving or hating Patti I don't do either. I don't love her. I don't hate her.

"It's not the best idea for Patti to miss a show of PATTI LUPONE GYPSY, especially at this point in the game, when the Tony voters are out and about."
Probably one of the reasons to announce it. Another reason is to prepare the audience for her replacement should it become necessary. This production doesn't come off as Gypsy...it is coming off as "The Patti LuPone Show."
Can we agree it's hysterical that this production, open a week(?) can be definitively declared a success while Legally Blond, a year on is still not sure if it's going to make money?
This production doesn't come off as Gypsy...it is coming off as "The Patti LuPone Show.
Yeah, like Ethel Merman, consummate Method actress that she was, shed all vestiges of her own outsize persona and subsumed herself to the character of Rose.
Or like Bernadette shed her aging-kewpie-doll schtick and played Rose Hovick and not Bernadette Peters.
Grow up, people. Star parts are cast with stars. Patti is no more playing Patti than Ethel was playing Ethel or Bernadette was playing Bernadette.
