Larkin's June...

Back to the original topic, I feel Larkin has been directed to play June as a monster, which for me dampens the surprise and impact of her leaving at the end of act 1.
As most of this production they went for the surface of these characters (except for Gaines).
Patti's Rose presents many of her numbers directly at the audience (which I feel is why audiences are going crazy for her, not maybe Rose, but Patti)and Benanti's anger and yelling in her big scene, seems to come out of nowhere.
Larkin is therefore playing June as the monster Laurents sees her as, but I like it better when the characters are not so black and white.
I know I am in the minority but that's how I see it.

Boy. Curtain, Bert, and Director really come in a team.
Curtain, I've seen you post these exact comments in a countless number of threads. You three don't give up. You have every right to your opinion, but my GOD WE GET IT NOW.

I see...so you can put your opinion on these boards as much as you want, but I cant?
Tonight, someone asked about Larkins June. And I posted it. I am allowed. I have never commented on her performances before.
I certainly have made it clear my opinion on the revival and the woman who plays Rose. But not Larkin.
And I will continue to post my comments whenever I like. After all, GYPSY is my favorite musical!

Posted: 5/16/08 at 10:54pmI love how you act all innocent. You have been VERY hateful about Patti and this production in the past. That's the problem. I've seen you on numerous sites posting the same old hateful bullsh*t.

Its funny how bert complain about me & PalJoey yet he is like a broken record. I am soo over you, bert... and please DO THE SAME~ leave GYPSY alone! and well get along! You already expressed your feelings about the show and we know it! no need to repeat it a million times!
Curtain- honey...youre joining the wrong team, bec. that's the team that I wont be on your side!

I can say my opinion whenever and whereever I like and as many times as I like.
Others come on this site and post in thread after thread how much they like the woman who plays Rose, and how happy they are for the woman playing Rose, and what a cute tshirt the woman playing Rose has on, and how happy they are that the woman playing Rose got a nomination, or an award, etc etc etc
I never say anything hurtful to anyone even though others have called me names and used curse words (including some who have posted in this very thread) about me.
I am just stating my opinons. And I will continue to use my voice whenI see fit.

I tried bert, but its hard to ignore a broken record that keeps playing over and over. The best way to deal with it is to just stack it in the trash and buy a new one bec. it is irritating to listen to!

You are a hoot. You almost seem jealous that so many are talking about Patti, and that Patti has received such amazing praise, and is already winning some great awards.
Do you wish you were Patti or something?

You are rather hard to avoid on this site too as you post in just about every thread.
But thats fine....live and let live. I have no ill feelings for you or any other poster on BWW. We are all here to discuss theatre and voice our opinions.

No I do not wish I were she.
I simply do not like the way she plays the role.
Thats all.

Bert seems to have a personal vendetta against Miss Patti for whatever reason!
and there's definitely a fine line between stating your opinion about the show and wh*ring for an attention. sad!

Patti LuPone thanks you for constantly talking about her.

I'm not on any team.
GYPSY is one of my passions.
I do feel that since this is a rather slow year for musicals and performances, GYPSY is getting a lot of attention and it should.
I love talking about it and I apoligize if I repeat myself.
I do think I made some new points in this thread, if people keep starting new threads about the show they have to be willing to hear opposite opinions.

Yeah... I know, but bert is a different story, honey! It's a long story.. its one one reality shows' drama that they air on VH1 over and over like a marathon and you have no choice bec. you lost your remote control.. lol!

Posted: 5/17/08 at 1:22amI should have been more specific. I meant her style of singing and the tone of her voice really captures June Hovic for me.

Saying stuff like that and backing it up is completely understandable and makes me see where you're coming from, as others could and should see too. I think that you have every right to post insightful opinions like that. By voicing my opinions on this, I hope I'm not sounding like some moderation police of what's acceptable and what's not, but I don't see why you're getting flack. I know you and Bert have said a lot of things about the production that are negative and it appears constantly, but it doesn't invalidate thoughts like those expressed above. At least yours are explained, I speak for yours alone in the "accused" category.
I think the production is quite wonderful and to me was utterly remarkable, but that's just me. I liked reading what you had to say about taking things at face value and how it isn't just black or white.

Of course you can, that doesn't mean you should. *Please*, I'm asking you, *please* stop coming into every thread and stating the same negative opinions over and over. *PLEASE!*
About Leigh Ann, I thought her June was delicious and stunning at City Center. She made the first-act of the show so much more heart-breaking and interesting for me. If Momma Was Married was a revaltion, a final understanding between two sisters, I loved it. I still really enjoyed her performance in the Broadway production but less so, it seems much less honest and motivated and it defintely comes off as more one-note.
Though it still is one of my favorite things about the production, and If Momma Was Married is a dream!

wow. i didn't expect a World War Broadway World.
in defense of this thread: I realize there are other threads and postings about this revival of Gypsy but I wanted to specifically see what Larkin does. I understand it's such a small part and that's why I asked what I asked! Not that anyone cares but I felt the need to explain myself! As for posting opinions on this site....ehhhh...not my business.
I do thank everyone for their intelligent and opinionated responses! And for those who are going to continue to post: can we hear about those great moments and actions this character does!?!?!

I wasn't a huge fan of Larkin's either. I thought it was one very one-note, and completely lacked nuance... until MOMMA, which was delightful.
I understood that the sisters finally had something to connect about, and redeemed a bit of my initial resentment, but not all.
She has an AMAZING voice though, and I'm estatic I'll have another great Gypsy recording in my collection.
