For what it's worth, I thought she was great.
And n2nbaby, you're crazy. I think she's gorgeous.
Wow! There's a name from days gone by!! And the only thing I know about her is from the Flyers!!!
(Unless there is another Kate Smith about which you are referring!)

Lea sounded fine. I think those who didn't like her went into it predisposed not to like her. Christina, on the other hand...
And yes, Kate Smith of the Philadelphia Flyers! A great singer even over and above her value to the hockey team!

Just curious...how can you actually tell whether someone is singing live or not...other than obvious flubs?
^ Usually prerecorded music and singing sounds flawless. And, sometimes people are horrible at lip syncing.
She wasn't bad ... but she wasn't very good either.
The E-news scroller at the bottom of my screen right now also misspelled her name "Lea Michelle."

"clearly got the gig based on name recognition"?
That is most definitely true, but based on that fact I was INCREDIBLY amused at the number of people in attendance of the party I was at who went 'who is she??' when she was singing.
I laughed. Just a bit. Guess they need to find a bigger name next time :)
She was fine. Not great but fine. As for name recognition, considering her show was on IMMEDIAELY after the game , her recogniton factor must have improved.

She looked fine, kinda like Idina Menzel looks fine. I have a feeling she'll grow up to look like her when gets older. She was a bit dramatic for my taste and sounded like Lea Michele as Rachel Berry as an Avon Spokeswoman singing the song. Granted she doesn't have to go far for her character because that's her in real life.
Her voice is just too plain jane for me. I know other girls who can sing circles around her.
Last night was another reason why I just don't get how Michael Slezak of EW/TV Line fame could call Lea Michele's DROMP "the best" performance on GLEE. My ears are still bleeding from when she sang that song at the Tony Awards.
I thought Michele was a trained singer? She sure didn't sound like it last night. It was like watching a real high school freshman sing the song. No vibrato, no resonance, nothing. It really exposes how much her voice gets doctored and fixed up at the studio. Very underwhelming.

They should have hired Kelli O'Hara

Another great Kelli O'Hara stadium performance. Obviously not pre-recorded.

Say what you want- it was much better and far more professional and than Christina and Fergie. Hands Down.

Couple of thoughts....
First, the audio on the broadcast was HORRENDOUS. Missed pickups, and so forth. So the first question I have would be whether she was getting anything in her in-ear monitors which would account for some of the pitchy-ness.
The Bat Boy and jsg03jd have it right: She has little resonance in her midrange, and a bit of harshness in her upper range. She's training herself to be a Idina Menzel and, well, there are better singers. Idina is the Alanis Morisette of Broadway -- overhyped and oversung. There are better Broadway singers whose have the breadth of tone, the power from the gut delivery without her harshness -- Christianne Noll comes to mind as someone who sings just enough.
