I saw Leachman in the Vancouver mounting of Hal Prince's Show Boat and her singing was fine. It's a comic song that requires comedic timing above vocal chops.
I would love love love to see her in Young Frank. I'm one of the few people who actually enjoyed it. But she would be amazing, although I would like to see her in something better than young frankenstein as much as I enjoyed it.
"She should spit in Brook's eye!"
Heck yeah!
I loved Cloris in the movie, but honestly, I don't think she will be better than Andrea Martin. However, it would be fantastic to see her in the show for a month or so, maybe until it closes.
I'm not sure how much difference it would have made, but I think if Mel had kept his promise with Matthew Broderick and also had Cloris Leachman in the cast, the show may have been better. Imagine Mel, at 82 not hiring Cloris because she was 81!!! The songs are the songs, so I don't know if it would have mattered, but it would have been great to see those two actors in it.
If Estelle Parsons can run around that set in AUGUST: OC and give a spectacular performance, I don't doubt that Leachman could be a part of YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN and perform that one number. Whether she should do it or not is a different story. Brooks should just close this show and get over himself.
Leachman was a Nellie understudy in the original production of South Pacific.
YF should just close.
But someone suggested on ATC that Leachman might make a great Violet in August: Osage County. I agree. Perhaps she'd be the person to replace Parsons if the show runs long enough and then maybe take it on the road.
NobodyHome, that'd be excellent. I mean, Vi is supposed to be in her 60s according to the published script, but I simply adored Parsons in the role and Leachman would be incredible too.
Also, given the way Vi's lived her life, it's not so hard to believe she might look older.
Do they think this mysteriously make it a sell out. We saw it once & enjoyed it. No reason to see it again just because she is in it.
Don't forget, everyone, that Leachman initially did the workshop of YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN, where she nailed the material (Frau's stuff never changed between her involvement and now) and was positively received by the creative team.
Wow, she could be great as Violet. I would love to see her sink her teeth into a role like that.
I would see it again just for her!
Advice to Cloris:
1. Make Mel pay you a fortune to do YF for 3 months and steal the show
2. Do a revival of "A Little Night Music" with Annette Bening as Desiree
3. Then do the LA premiere of "Grey Gardens" as Big Edie with Cybill Shepherd
Clo,
Don't do it. The show doesn't deserve you. Mel has no right to be playing age cards when he himself is hardly a spring chicken. He's had flops before "The Producers" and now he's having another one. Don't let him use you to give a show that was tired before it opened some juice.
Especially with those absurd prices that no one is paying...why bother when they can get discount tix at TKTS? It's not worth it for whatever salary they'll offer you unless it's coming from Mel personally, because it won't come any other way. Don't give him the luxury of exploiting you to save a bloated corpse.
Take any, hell take ALL of the other offers. But **** Mel. He was good, and now he's not. Tell him where he can stick his offer. You've got bigger fish to fry, and none of them are his.
I hope she tells Mel to suck it.
His unceremoniously dropping her from the show following her RAVED about workshop performance was shameful. He doesn't deserve to reap the reward of having her in his flop now that he finally believes she's good and able business when everyone else knew it from the beginning.
You're amazing, Ms. Leachman. Congrats on your exciting new offers!
Cloris was just on the View and nodded her head yes when asked if she would appear in YF on Broadway!! She is the best!!
"but I think if Mel had kept his promise with Matthew Broderick and also had Cloris Leachman in the cast, the show may have been better."
You must be kidding. The only nice thing I can think of to say about YF is that it didn't have Matthew Blahderick in it.
Can't agree with you there. I have seen Broderick on stage many times and he has always brought a great presence to his roles, especially in musical comedy.
I would finally see the damned thing if she goes in.
And I agree strongly with Fflagg -- she could be breathtaking in GARDENS. A stunningly good idea. She sings swell, by the way, as any former Nellie F. would.

I'm going to echo everyone else, I will finally see this show if Cloris joins the cast, I absolutely am in love with her. Age ain't nothin' but a number.
I've never seen the show and once the reviews came out I didn't have interest to see it, but I'd love to witness Leachman reprise her role.
Though honestly the other offers she's getting sound much better.
Tarantino's Inglorious Bastards
A one woman show (which would be insane and outstanding)
grand marshal of the Tournament of Roses even sounds better than YF
Add me to the list of people who would see it if she were cast. She shows that age doesn't mean a thing... sometimes. Mel Brooks wishes he aged half as well as her.

stagefan it sounds a little rough did mel steal money from you or what ! Why don't you do your own dirty work and spit in his eye yourslf .Hes 82 hell probably whip your butt !!
Now that she's a famous dancer from TV, I hope they add some major choreography for the role!
"cantstandbrody"? Hmmm...Mel, is that you?
I didn't like this show the first time around, but would definitely go back to see Leachman if she were cast.
