Sherie is leading...though she enters the plot somewhat late in Act I, she is integral to the plot and has tons to do.
Sometimes, if there aren't enough elegible nominees, the Tony committee will consider a featured role as a leading role, like they did the year Randy Graff was nominated for "A Class Act," leaving Judith Ivey to be the only eligible person in the Best Actress in a Musical category NOT to be nominated! (She was pretty bad though.)
I cannot wait for the TONYs this year. I've been waiting for a year like this. In past years it's been pretty obvious who the winners were. This year we have a lot of talented contenders and it's going to be hard to predict who the winners will be. Perhaps, if I have enough money, I might actually buy a ticket to the awards this year.

It's too bad DESSA ROSE will be off-Broadway. There would be two contenders right there, I'll bet. It should be interesting to see what the Drama Desk does.

Sutton is a lock, and she will probably win. I saw "Little Women" last week and loved her. Also, Maureen McGovern is the frontrunner for Best Featured Actress, by my calculations. She was phenomenal as Marmee. They couldn't have cast the role better.
I wouldn't call Christina a lock. She is unproven on Broadway, and if she gets poor reviews, count her out.
Saw "Opposite of Sex" in San Fran. It was terrific. Kerry is giving a hilarious performance. It will probably make it to Broadway for next season.
Kelli and Victoria could cancel each other out.
Eden and Erin will only be nominated if they absolutely need to fill that spot, given that their respective shows were panned.
Much as I love her, I won't hold my breath for Melissa.
Sherie should be considered a leading actress from what I hear. I'm seeing the show on January 31.
From what I've heard, Sara should also be considered lead.
My predictions, as of now: Sutton, Sherie, Kelli, Christina, Victoria.
For the time being, I will assume that, due to cuts, Sara is considered supporting. If not, bump Victoria for her.
I don't know if I'd consider Kelli O'Hara's role a lead in Piazza. The last few times I saw it, the only lead that jumped out at me was Victoria Clark (who, based on her out of town performance definitely deserves a nom).

margo,
you never cease to amaze me-I had never heard of the joel grey/chicago story-what a ridiculous catch-22...and yet so believable.

Whle I agree that Eden wont be getting a nomination, Erin's show has not opened yet, therefore it hasnt been panned. Eden wont becuase they dont have a catagory "Best Female Screamer"
Theaterguy2, I was referring to the London production of "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang", but I will concede that you are right. I do not expect the show to get good notices here, though. It truly is terrible.
Helllooooo.
You're forgetting Kristen.
She will be nominated.
Yes. I've got to say thanx to Margo for the Joey Grey- Amos nomination confusion. I always wondered why he didn't get nominated! Now I know why.

It seems somewhat apparent that Ms. Applegate doesn't have a stellar vocal range. However, she could act the sh*t out of Charity, and surprise a lot of people.
It's far too difficult to predict exactly who'll be nominated at this point. Judging by what has opened, or will in the next few days, Sutton appears to be the only sure-fire nominee for right now. I'm hoping she takes home Tony #2 this June.
I agree PJ, it seems to me she is the one that deserves it the most in my eyes... I really hope she wins!
RENThead, enLIGHist, Ozalot, Grobanite, Ringer, Pickwick LW, Wicked, Lost, American Dreams, West Wing
Lea S. Hugh J. Adam P. Idina M. Matt M. Taye D.
I will be utterly shocked if Sutton walks away without the Tony...
If I had it my way, the nominees would be:
Sutton Foster
Christina Applegate
Victoria Clarke
Eden Espinosa
Sherie Rene Scott
I saw BKLYN again last night, and Eden has grown so much into the role, and as an actress. While the book doesnt give her much to work with, I thought she was magnificent. She has improved so much since previews. And the screaming factor has gotten way out of control, there wasnt one note she screamed last night.
I agree! I saw "Brooklyn" a few weeks ago. No, it's not a great show by any stretch, not even a very good one. But, it's not the worst thing I've seen, and Eden (though, not the best actor) has great potential. Her voice, I'm sorry to people who feel as though they know everything, is FAR from a scream. It's a high belt. IF she was screaming, her voice wouldn't be holding up...which, after all she did in CA at theme parks, "Wicked" and she's been with "Brooklyn" since it's birth, her voice would have been LONG gone if that was screaming.

If it's indeed true that Eden's screaming has evolved into singing, then I'd like to ask that they re-record that HORRIBLE radio ad.

If Christina is nominated, it will be a freakin' Natasha Richardson scenario ALL over again. They both can act, sure... but its best actress in a MUSICAL.. I still think the whole package should be taken into consideration.
*sigh* Whatever, the Tony's are as political as the next thing. I've given up trying to predict or hope for anything where they're concerned.

Correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't Sally Bowles not supposed to be a great singer? I think you are right in wanting the total package. If a person in a *major* singing role couldn't handle it, it would be unacceptable to me. But IF it is called for in the role doesn't that make a difference? Now I am not familiar with Sweet Chairty so I cannot comment on that.
Charity has never been considered a "singing" role, it's a role with much more stringent dance requirements than singing ones. Verdon was an amazing performer, but singing was never her strong suit. Assuming that Applegate won't get a nomination because she's not the strongest singer doesn't make any sense. What's important for Charity is that the actress performing her has the ability to connect viscerally with an audience on an emotional level, and make them forget that they are rooting for a character who is basically a loser.
Daisy Hilton is right: Sally Bowles is supposed to be an awful singer. Natasha was wonderful. Also, I know there's a thread going around about Teri Hatcher as Sally on the national tour. She and Norbert were both excellent.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Natasha play the role of Tracy in London. Even so, it will always be my beloved Melissa's role to me.
I hope Kelli receives a nom for supporting for Dracula (and tom as actor - i mean, he drove the show)
