Who do you think are performers who caught a lot of negativity for their performance - but really weren't/aren't that bad?
I think one of the best examples in recent years is.
Christina Applegate. Christina caught a bunch of bull sh*t on her journey to Broadway. And once she started on Broadway, not many people were crazy about her. Now mostly everyone who sees Charity, is crazy over Christina. No one is saying Christina is good as previous Charitys. I don't think anyone will ever be as good as Gwen Verdon in the role - considering the role was constructed around her talents.
So who do you think was a great performer - but caught a lot of negativity for their performance?

Bernadette Peters in Gypsy, tho she got glowing reviews
Melissa Errico and Tom Hewitt
the cast of Good Vibrations
well Ljay as we have discussed in other threads we disagree completely about Christina. You seem to be ignoring the bad posts, and all of her negative reviews she is still getting and focusing on the good aspects. She was just OK but that is about as good as I would say.
How does one "catch" negativity? Being outside without a sweater? Not washing ones hands? Because Pontius Pilate washed his hands and he got quite a bit of bad press...

I must have missed something. WEren;t they in Dracula?
Yes they were. She was listing them as separate entries.
Melissa Errico and Tom Hewitt
AND
The cast of Good Vibrations.
Not that difficult to understand.
I'm going to add Eden Espinosa, Ramona Keller, and Karen Olivo from BKLYN. The show did not fail because of them. It was poorly written. Those girls were all great when I saw the show.
Thanks zoran. My apologies for reading it incorrectly.

I thought Espinosa had zero stage presence and her voice gave me a headache -- some of those sounds emanating from her made me think that she had big pebble in her shoe or something and was in pain (I certainly was). Olivo made no impression whatsoever on me (I barely remember her). Keller is talented, but that TIRED old sterotypical sassy back mamma belonged in a Pam Grier blaxploitation movie from the 70s and not on Broadway in 2005 -- it verged on offensive (and for many I know it WAS offensive).
Joey Fatone in Rent.

haha, joey fatone in little shop.
Rosie O'Donnell in Fiddler.
(Oh, wait, save that for next week...)
Rosie in a few shows. I know most of the people here liked Rosie in Bway shows, but I know others have not. She may not have the best voice ever, but she has one hell of a stage presence.
Idina Menzel...yes, she won the Tony, but lots of people on this board can't stand the sight of her name. Why? Because, her fans can be juvenile and annoying, doesn't mean she didn't give a wonderful, Tony award winning performance. The stranger the fans are, the more likely the artist is to attract negativity. Tori Amos has some CRAZY fans (I told one that I was never that impressed with her and they told me to go and die...literally, but I digress).
Eden Espinosa, I truly enjoy. If ANYTHING, Ramona Keller has more of a screaming, annoying quality to her voice. I'm not saying I don't care for her, but everyone on this board is usually more accepting of her "screech" than that of Eden's. I wonder why that is.
Joley Fisher in "Cabaret." Everyone is always talking about every other Sally, yet I never hear her mentioned. I saw three different Sally's and she was BY FAR the best. Even better than Natasha, if you ask me.

I also enjoyed Eden Espinosa in Brooklyn. She does sound a little screetchy at times, but every other time she sings completely makes up for it.
David Hasselhoff caught a bunch of poo for Jekyll & Hyde, but I honestly didn't think he was all that bad. He wasn't spectacular, and did do an irritating throaty thing a couple times, but I still really enjoyed the show.
I thought John C. Reilly was an absolutely fantastic Stanley in Streetcar, despite the traditional casting.
Idina Menzel caught negativity because she won the Tony over TONYA PINKINS! I know it was the Tony Voters who voted and Idina was just the hapless victim of a Tony award but honestly people are going to be scratching their heads for years to come about that one!
Reilly was phenominal.
This title sounds like it is a tribute to Idina...
...or Charlotte.
Tonya already had her chance to shine - and had her Tony.
I think the voters felt this was Idina's turn to shine.
Idina caught a lot of sh*t, and I honestly couldn't find much wrong with her performance. She was - dare I say - fantastic , the two times I saw her.
Tom Hewitt was very good in DRACULA, despite the fact that the show itself sucked.

Me and my friends always laugh about Idina's loud, bizarre-emphasis line readings, especially the ones on the Original Cast Album.
"BLONDE."

Tom Hewitt in Dracula
John Secada in Cabaret (I seem alone on this one)

TheColorOfFlame,
i know what you mean. also, some of the lines she says in defying gravity, the way she says them is hilarious. whenever me and my friends are singing it, we imitate the way she says them, and laugh are butts off. hehe, i'm such a dork.

It didn't suck...it just needed A LOT of work.

Did i really just see someone write that Hasselhof wasn't the absolute biggest train wreck in Musical theatre history? I must have misread that, because there's no way anyone would write that,
as for my picks, i've seen quite a bit of negativity toward Banderas and Stamos for Nine, and i was pleased with both of them.
Joey Fatone as Mark. I have a tape of him in the show and the more I watch it the more I think that he was actually really good. Infact I think he was better than his Roger counterpart.
