"it sucks but when people pay $150 for a seat for two hours they feel they can do whatever they want to do with that seat. can't say I blame them."
Really? I blame them.

^^^Me too.
You pay for a suite in an expensive hotel, you don't get to trash it b/c it cost a lot of money. What a ridiculous rationalization.

^^ Yes, because your neighbors may have also paid $150 each for THEIR seats.
But I do think the cost of a Broadway ticket may contribute to a spectator's sense of entitlement, however illogical that sense may be.

Posted: 7/7/14 at 12:58amAn entire family sat behind me at the original Pippin in 1973 eating egg salad sandwiches. Obnoxious then. Obnoxious now.

Opera /Ballet ? Not so much, probably not at all. Plays?
Maybe it's musical theatre that brings out the worst in an audience.
I'm sorry but it will only get worse as this is the age when noone respects the words 'you can't'. Someone somewhere on BWW said it is now all about 'I'. True, how sad.

"It's not what you do...but what you're caught at". That is the mentality today. If there are no repercussions or punishment for the behavior, then the actions will continue.

Posted: 7/7/14 at 11:14amI can't imagine leaving a show after i paid for it- i mean, i would move, complain or do whatever other possible means of dealing with the situation then walking out of a show- even if i was seeing a terrible show- i figure since i paid, i may as well get the most i can out of it.

Posted: 7/7/14 at 12:16pmdarreyl102; Why? Why is it more imaginable to sit there for another hour and be in total misery? I ended up having a great time that night after I left. As I said.. I HAD seen the show before.

Posted: 7/7/14 at 12:39pmThat's how I feel- as in ME personally- I wasn't knocking you, just saying that I would never do it UNLESS i had exhausted every other option. If i had NO other alternative but to leave and all other ways of handling it were not successful, then i would leave. That's just how I feel. I already explained why- I paid, and also i really LOVE Pippin. Of course if i had already seen the CURRENT cast, then i might have felt differently about it. I have never walked out of a show, and i have sat through some awful experiences either on or off stage- But like i said, that is me.

Yes, you can blame them. Just because they bought tickets doesn't give them the right to ruin the show for everyone else.

Posted: 7/8/14 at 8:15pmYou know.. you can always step outside for a sec, call the cops, and tell them they are creating a public disturbance. I bet if more people start doing stuff like that this behavior would stop.

Posted: 7/8/14 at 8:31pmThat's ridiculous, why should people behaving correctly have to miss some of the show so they can call the NYPD, who will proceed to laugh at you? People who are doing the right thing should not be inconvenienced further, it's not our job.

I would call the cops if I felt so strongly about it. I did it at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles. They came right away and I was glad I did it. . Don't know about New York. But a public disturbance can be defined in many ways. If your going to be in torture sitting there putting up with bad behavior then I have no issue with doing something about it. It might not be worth the ordeal. But that is a different thing.
Don't you guys call authorities for cell phone talkers in quiet parts of trains? I seem to remember reading that. Same thing.
