I saw this in Birmingham last week and loved most of the alterations. One thing I didnt like though was girl that played eponine (sorry I really cnat remember her name and dont have the programme to hand) doing On My Own in an almost pop/RnB version. This is muscial theatre at the hip, not a pop tour at the nia. What did everyone else think?
Wasn't to sure about that choice either - and I started to twitch every time the lady playing Fantine sung/screeched a high-pitched vowel during 'I dreamed a dream'... Other than that, I absolutely loved the new production and can't wait to see it again in Bristol soon.
I wasn't that keen on the tour Fantine either. My friend thought she was a terrible singer, while I thought some of her wailing may have been "acting", however, her main fault was that I just didn't care much for her.
I expected to hate the Eponine based on what people had said and YouTube clips, but on stage I loved her. I'm still not 100% sure about her approach to On My Own, particularly the introduction, but the actress is very good, and overall her Eponine feels authentic.
Everyone else is excellent IMO. One of the strongest casts I've seen.
Sorry you feel that way about Madalena Alberto. I actually thought she was fantastic when I saw the show in Cardiff on opening night. Rosalind James was very good at playing Eponine, however she messed up On My Own in Cardiff on operning night, but managed to cover it nicely.
Sorry, I realise reading back that what I wrote appeared much harsher than intende. I thought Madelena was good, but didn't connect with me as much as the rest of the main characters who were outstanding. It's all relative.
That's interesting about Rosalind mucking up On My Own on opening night. The clip I originally heard may have been from then, which would explain thinking the changes worked better when I saw it myself. A lot of people have had issues with her (the production) changing the tone of the song to something a bit more modern, but from an artistic point of view, I like it.
The night I went the strongest cast were the big names, John Owen-Jones, Earl Carpenter and Gareth Gates, but the whole cast are better than the one I saw last time I went in the West End. I hope they release this CD soon.
I went again to today's matinee, and I have to say that I much prefered Madalena this time. I don't know if she was just having a better performance, or if I was in a different frame of mind.
It's press night in Edinburgh tonight, and SuBo is in the building! Let's hope she doesn't try to sing along (out of time). Speaking of which, the man next to me kept humming. I was so tempted to shout at him, but I don't think he realised he was doing it, and if his wife didn't have the guts to tell him, I didn't want to get into a fight.
I liked Rosalind James as Eponine, and her On My Own was one of the highlights for me. However, this may be because it was my first time of seeing Les Mis and I wasn't enjoying it, so I may have liked Rosalind's On My Own because it was different from the rest.
Rosalind James just didnt find enough vunerability in Eponines Charactor for me, I'm afraid. She just portrade her as being bitter for being hard-done-by. I much prefered Nancy Sullivan and Cassandra Compton in this role, their acting and rendition of On My Own sat far better with me.
I really enjoyed Rosalind's portrayal and thought she played the part very well. I also enjoyed her rendition of On My Own even if some thought it too poppy. Nancy was good both times I saw her in terms of acting but how strained is she on the high notes? She struggled big time and for that reason, I preferred Rosalind.
Upcoming Shows: 9 to 5 (Birmingham), Priscilla (Wimbledon), Matilda (London), Cats (Manchester) and others TBC.
Nothing has yet been said by the producers. It is all a waiting game with the editing of the (already recorded) CD and the right release time (which will presumably be in connection with the 25th anniversary concert) at the moment.
EVIE - yes, with DRV as Fantine. I saw it on Bway and she broke my heart. Far and away the best Fantine I've ever seen or heard. Her interpretation was so raw and true. Utterly fabulous.
kc2 - I'm jealous you were able to see this production live, I've only seen her performance in...ahem....you know...and just couldn't get past her voice. IMO it just didn't fit.
EVIE - thats fair enough and I do think it was a performance that needed to be experienced in person. I was 3rd row orch and the way she completely inhabited the character as opposed to just "singing" it like so many others do / have done was a wonderful thing to watch. I know I hold a minority opinion but it was truly one of the best theatrical experiences of my life.
Every other "IDAD" I've seen has had an awkward moment from the actress where you can see them think "and know I get to sing my pretty song and have my moment" but with her it seemed so much more ... natural. Like it just flowed out of Fantine due to her emotional state in that moment, kwim?
I'm rambling, forgive me. I just loved it and am annoyed at the general dismissive attitude towards her stint in that role.
