The new 40th anniversary cast recording of Les Misérables releases digitally tonight at midnight EST 5/29. Pre-save or pre-order the album here.
Producer Cameron Mackintosh said in a statement “As Les Miz approached its 40th record-breaking year in London last October, I felt it was the perfect time to record the first complete album of the contemporary production of this great musical as it is now staged all over the world. We wanted it to have the quality of a studio recording while maintaining the excitement and emotion of being on stage with the actors, right in the midst of the action. ... Hopefully audiences will enjoy Hearing The People Sing on this new cast album as much as we enjoyed making it.”

I have to chuckle at the shamlessnes of it: "the first complete album of... the contemporary production." Never stop milking it, Cameron. The Complete Symphonic Recording remains my favorite.

I laughed at that too. Sounds like he's justifying it by saying it's the first complete recording that captures the musical "as it is now staged all over the world." I haven't seen a production of Les Miz since the original Broadway tour. Has it changed that much? The track list looks almost identical to the complete symphonic recording.

This album and the current production is about 20 minutes shorter than the complete symphonic recording, reflecting the various cuts made over the years. It will also have the newer orchestrations. This production was recorded for the 25th anniversary 2010 cast album, but even though it was recorded live they did not release the complete score. It was recorded again in 2020 but that concert production was also not the complete score, so this new album will technically be the first time the complete score of this current production is being made available.

So the "first complete recording" of a version that's shorter than the previous version? Hysterical.

Have been giving this a listen this morning. Up through "Master of the House" and holy over-emoting Batman! I mean I know subtlety isn't the order of the day with "Les Miz" but my goodness I want to tell everyone to dial it down a notch. Plus the orchestrations sound so thin. Don't think this would ever replace any of my go-to recordings.

I think the emoting is part of "maintaining the excitement and emotion of being on stage with the actors." There are moments that are shouted that I wish were sung. The orchestrations are definitely thin, less than 20 I think, but they've been that way since 2006 or so. There are some moments of the newer orchestrations that I like and I will say I enjoyed hearing them a bit more clearly recorded in studio vs the two recent live cast albums. As far as the "All-Star" cast I would have preferred to get Lucie Jones as Fantine.

I've grown to appreciate the newer orchestrations, but the 10th Anniversary concert recording will still always be my MIZ of choice.
