Folks, I'm in the minority when I say that Right Before My Eyes, Sail Me Away, After All This Time and The San Fran version of Welcome to the New World are four of the best songs EVER!!!!!!
I have to say, I really enjoyed most of this score...especially "I Want More" and "Sail Me Away."
I Enjoy the music like no one's buisness. Key word, enjoy. I WISH this was released. Even on iTunes, ala Capeman.
PERSERVE THAT SAD LOOK ON YOUR FACE!
Lizzy, I think this quote sums up your most illustrious posting history quite effectivly.
"I Want More" wasn't just a decent song. It was a breath of fresh air...
And that quote? Really?! I suppose. I thought it would be "Pain and pain and pain."
P.S. As a lyricist, I've often been tempted to do a little rewriting and make the songs a little less tied to the plot (and also make more sense). They're just so darn fun.
You mean you don't like Bernie Taupin's incredibly plodding and painfully semi-rhyming lyrics? I can't imagine why.
Welcome to the New World made me want to barf when I saw the show in previews at the Palace. As a New Orleanian, I was offended. As a theater-goer, I knew the show had jumped the shark way before then, but it was still painful. Ugh, I'll never get those 2 hrs 45 minutes of my life back. But "Sail Me Away" was a beautiful song. And Hugh Panaro is a fine performer, but the material just fell apart on stage. It should have been all like "I Want More" -- totally camped up, but it just teetered around, instead.
I would love to see the cast recording though...
You didn't see Welcome to the New World when it was all dancy and black & white and One Short Day-like.
In San Francisco, "Welcome to the New World" was a lighter-waving type anthem, complete with all mortals apparently clad in "One Short Day" costumes that were made of newspaper.
Watching Drew Sarich in the show. Wow. What talent. What dreck. I would kill to see him in something good.
He was fun.
Even in the ensemble.

I would love a copy of 'I Want More.' What a great song.
Oh LC, just make it easier.
Drew was definitely the best part of the show, I would've loved to have seen him as Lestat. I loved his Armand outfit and wig. Whenever I picture him in my head, it's with him in that ensemble. Yum.
Annyway, It's weird, I had mixed feelings when I first saw it in SF, and for the most part I couldn't keep my mind from wandering for 2 and a half hours and I was really fidgety the whole time. And at the very end, I turned to my friend and I seriously said 'What The F___ Was That?' I just couldn't believe what I had seen. It wasn't that it was so bad, it was just such a hot, unbelievable mess.
And I saw it again in Nyc as a timekiller inbetween Sweeney Todd shows, and I found it to be slightly better and more fluid and it didn't seem like such a trainwreck. Then I eventually found the soundboard audio and the video recordings and then the Drew/Lestat recording, and then I really got into it. So I think the show just needed to grow on me. It took a while though.

My boyfriend and I saw this in SF on New Years Eve. We had a blast.
"You didn't see Welcome to the New World when it was all dancy and black & white and One Short Day-like."
What were they wearing? Newspapers?
Allison was my favorite. I'd love to work with her.
I loved it when it was all like, 10 minutes long and dancy. They shortened it way too much.
If they had kept Welcome to The New World at it's original length, the show would've lasted, Gob damn it.

I kind of wish they released this cast recording. C'mon Elton!!!
"For everyone that comes along, knocking on this door,
Don't blame me, it's your fault, that I want more!"
I never got that first line. Eesh that's bad.
I woke up with a cold but feel a little better knowing this topic is here. Now, I wonder how long it'll last...

One of the worst things about the Broadway version was the reworked finale. From the Dead was one of the better songs in the show.

Let's get some Drew Sarich loving going on in here, while the thread's around.
The thing I remember most about Lestat was thinking how much Gabrielle reminded me of Moses.
"From the Dead" was kind of cheesy, though. Now we've all learned an (un)life lesson and sing a cheery finale!

It is cheesy, but it's...conclusive. "I am the vampire Lestat...and I will live forever" isn't a very emotionally satisfying ending.
Even if Lestat was completely lying in the "From the Dead" finale. "Oh, yeah, I've totally learned my lesson, I'll never make another vampire again. Promise."
Plus, it had a cappella harmony. I'm a sucker for that.
