So it finished before 10:30?
Yup
Oh, that was magnificent. I really wish that I'd been able to see it live, but I loved it. Victoria Clark is absolutely stunning. I liked Katie... she seemed to struggle a tad vocally, but as others have noted, she has a very childlike quality to her acting. It seemed to fit very well. The rest of the cast was wonderful as well, particularly Sarah Uriarte Berry. "The Beauty Is" is apparently the song that makes me cry lately.

A fantastic performance though Katie Clarke was slightly off in the title number, I believe she provides a Broadway-quality performance in the show yet I much prefer Kelli, there was something unique about her Clara. Aaron Lazar's "Il Mondo Era Vuoto" was beyond spectacular, the audience seemed thrilled. And Victoria Clark just keeps finding new layers to the role, just like wine, she only gets better with time.
i thought it was amazing. i picked up a lot more this time around since i knew nothing going in seeing it last summer. i think all of the actors are still doing a great job. Katie was exellent, but i do like Kelli's performance a lot better.

wow, i am really impressed!
i thought i wouldnt care for it @ all!
& i *did* reach Maximum Romance Density towards the end, but watching it was a fantastic experience!!!
that Victoria Clark is something special!!!
probably its been said, but she has a real Geraldine Paige quality to her (a huge & loving compliment from me). I will certainly keep an eye & ear on this actress!!!
i also really enjoyed the brilliant set pieces!
amazing how the stage seemed to go on forever....& could turn from dreamscape to nightmare in an instant!
OH & the costumes were gorgeous!!!!!!!

What a stunning broadcast. I was choked up at the end, something that didn't happen when I saw it live. I'm thinking that knowing the story and the better angle helped a lot.
Fabulous performances by all.
I enjoyed this emensely! Victoria is great as always.
Aaron Lazar is beyond wonderful and will make a GREAT Enjolras.
Chris Sarandon (Mr Joanna Gleason himself and Patti C were great...
but... give me Kelli O'Hara anyday.
LOVELY sets, neat camera angles and gorgeous music.
LOVED it

ABSOLUTLEY AMAZING!!
I LOVED Victoria as usual. I thought Katie was very good, except for a few voice parts, but she was wonderful. Especially in her acting, she was perfect. Aaron blew me away! I was a bit unsure about not seeing the PBC, but I am completley thrilled with this performance and am happy that they showed this cast! WOW!! STILL IN SHOCK!
I didn't enjoy Lazar's performance as much as I thought I would from the raves he's been getting here. I much preferred David Burnham's interpretation on the role. He may be slightly beneath Lazar vocally but in my opinion his Fabrizio was more believable. His immaturity, his youth, his being flustered with the language barier all had a better dynamic with Clarke than Lazar did in my opinion.
Victoria Clark is a goddess on a broadway stage. Enough said, she's phenomenal, so layered that there wouldn't be enough adjectives to describe what she did with that role.
I believe Katie Clarke when she acts. I agree with most if not all of her choices and completely love the subtlety, nuance, and innocence that she brings to the personality of Clara. However, I can't handle her vocal issues. She is flat on those top notes, which is forgivable, but she doesn't have the flexibility for some of the harder aspects of the score as in her interlude and say it somehow. There are some parts where vocally I feel she is right on though. In her tyrade, aside from the one line "foreeever" I thought she was spot on. I never saw Kelli so I can't compare, but judging just from the recording I really prefer Kelli's voice.
Overall, the show is lush and beautiful. It's a great show to have been preserved like this, but it's also a show that you have to see live. A lot of the understanding of the supporting characters is lost when your limited to the point of view of the camera, and I miss that about the theatrical experience.
I watched it (and taped it!) and I loved it. The cast was perfect. And I so prefer Aaron Lazar over Matt Morrison anyday. PERFECT! He was so cute and anxious in the early parts and Katie Clarke was excellent as Clara. She's gonna be huge one day! Hell, she's 21!! And Victoria...I bow to you.
A couple inquiries. I noticed a few differences from the cast recording - my only reference. Is there any specific reason why they changed Clara's age from 12 to 10?
Adam Guettel...I heart you!

We have at least 8 PBS stations on digital cable here in SF including a High Def channel but I see that "Light" is not on the High Def channel!
i must say, despite my apprehension about it, i loved this show.
one thing of note during the intermission special, who knew it took that much force to make that little hat fly.
Jim: I had no idea! D'oh!
Well, the TV that gets HD somehow doesn't agree with the VCR, so I couldn't have taped it in HD anyway. Oh well.
of course this wasn't as good as seeing it in person...you didn't get the affect of the gorgeous scenery in the same way, but i still love it
victoria clark rocks my world. and she keeps getting better.....even though she was amazing when i saw her do it in person
katie clarke did seem to struggle a little vocally, but i didn't feel that way when i saw her in december
woot
I feel like I'm the only one who was bored. The orchestrations were very beautiful, but overall, I was just...bored. I didn't care for the music. On a brighter note, I think the cast gave great performances.
I think there was a certain magic missing watching this on TV. Nothing can feel like sitting in that amazing theater, and Italy comes alive right before you, it was amazing.
About Katie.. I the innocence. But she is no where near as good as Kelli vocally. She just couldn't sustain the vocals like Kelli. And some of the notes she missed induced cringes. Sweet voice, just not powerful enough.
The show is nothing close to boring seeing it live. Amazing experience seeing it live. Cannot be topped.

Lizzie, what's a VCR? Just kidding. I have the dual tuner DVR from Comcast and it can record in HD if the broadcast in in HD. The bad part of that is it ends up taking up a lot of space so you can't record as many shows. I think it can only handle about 18 hours total in HD and I have to have my daily "Passions", "All My Children" and "The Bold and The Beautiful" (now I know what became of Patrick Duffy ("Dallas"), Jack Wagner ("Melrose Place"), Mario Lopez, Lorenzo Lamas, and Antonio Sabato, Jr. They are all on that show).

I soooo miss Kelli who was simply amazing. She was a much better singer and actress. Where did she go to school?
Oklahoma. Same voice teacher as Kristin Chenoweth.

Ahh. So.freaking.amazing. That's all I have to say.
Don't even get me started on that hat. Usually when you find out how something works it becomes less amazing. But now that I know how they make the hat fly I think I'm more amazed. I think somehow I understand it less.

If anyone reading is in the Houston area, PBS has a half-hour interview with Katie at 11 tonight. They taped it a couple of weeks ago at her house. As far as the show goes, we all have to wait till 8:30 tomorrow.
Just imagine how hard God has to work to make my hat blow off every g*d damn time I cross the street. And He doesn't even get to use strings.
