This is the source of the news, and Lin's participation is neither confirmed nor new.

Wonder how much of the original cast will join him. My guess would be he may use some of the cast from the London "In the Heights" cast to fill some parts.
To clarify, he isn't opening the show. He still wants to be apart of the show in 2018, but isn't official.
Apparently "hopes to" has been interpreted very loosely by some.

Gabriela Garcia (Nina) would be wonderful as Eliza! And I could see Arun Blair-Mangat (Benny) in Hamilton, as well. Sam Mackay (Usnavi) could be a great Hercules Mulligan/Madison. I really enjoyed this cast.

I have also been hoping for Gabriela Garcia as Eliza! I thought she was spectacular as Nina. I also think Cleve September, who played Sonny when I saw it, would make a fabulous Laurens/Philip. I thought Sam Mackay did a good job, but kind of hope he isn't cast since I would like them to continue with the precedent that has been set for casting POC in all the featured roles (with the exception of King George, Seabury, and Charles Lee).

Sam Mackay is white so shouldn't be getting cast as a principal. (He shouldn't have in In the Heights either but considering this is a much bigger production overseen by Lin I expect them to be much more strict on these things).
Whilst some of the ITH cast will be considered, I'd like to see some new faces.
Gabriela Garcia would be an excellent and heartbreaking Eliza. I hope that happens!

Oh god Garcia is NOT strong enough to be in this. Most of the current ITH cast makes it feel like a really good high school show.

I haven't seen Garcia yet but I saw the show at Southwark and the first Kings Cross cast and as much as I like the production I think the casting is the weakest part (with a few notable exceptions).

^ Agree. I love Sam, and I think the current (3rd or 4th?) Benny & Daniela are wonderful, but the rest, like I said, high school ish. Very good for this production but it's not the calibre I want to see in Hamilton.

He wouldn't be eligible for nomination for an Olivier award, then, right?
Right.

This is amazing news. Would love to see it in London.
It's not even news!

I'm not sure if they've changed policies, but Oliviers do nominate replacements. Elaine Paige was nominated for Sunset Blvd, and she was the third replacement in that show.

Wrong, the Oliviers also nominate replacements. If he plays at least 30 performances he can be eligible even as a replacement.
