I went to CATNYP, but you seem to have to know what you want to see. Is there a list of the available videos so one can know what's there without thinking up titles and going back and forth and back and forth?
Thanks.
Bumping this up to ask a question. My friend and I are studying musical theatre in the UK and are college is planning to put on a production of RENT as part of our final year. Both of us are coming to New York in Jan 2017 for xmas and the production is happening around May 2017. Do you think we would be able to get in an watch the RENT archive?
If not, maybe cause its restricted or something, I would KILL to see Next To Normal, and am wondering the same question could I see it?
Thanks for your help guys!
Go to the first page of this thread and read MyManCape's post. Gives you contact info. Might be a good place to start as you have to make an appointment in advance to see a video.
Yeah I would just contact the library (or look up their actual archive on their website.) I was in the city last week and was able to watch the 2008 Gypsy with Patti LuPone and it seemed like they had quite an extensive library so I wouldn't be too concerned! Good luck!
Thank you so much guys! Did you have any problems with viewing them? Reason given etc?
Nope--no trouble whatsoever. It's a pretty simple process. You first have to obtain a temporary library card (in the same building at the circulation desk.) After you have your card, you head up to the 3rd floor for the TOFP library and fill out a quick form. You have to give a few personal details and the reason for your viewing. Other than that, you just sit down and enjoy! :)
Oh thats great to know! Thank you so much Jshan05. You've been great help!

RENT's final performance on Broadway was commercially released and is available for purchase on DVD (and on youtube, just search for "RENT Live". It's not the original cast, obviously, but that should suffice.

Do we know if Hamilton has been recorded for the archives yet?
I highly doubt Hamilton has been filmed so early into its run and even if it has been I also doubt they would grant the general public access to view it.
If if they did that the anybody would try to see it via the archives as opposed to actually purchasing an actual ticket to see the production.
You can get the information about how to use TOFT from the good folks themselves:
Using the TOFT Archive: http://www.nypl.org/about/divisions/theatre-film-and-tape-archive/access
Plan Your Research Visit: http://www.nypl.org/about/locations/using-the-library/plan-your-research-visit
Search the Collection: https://catalog.nypl.org/search/X# Enter one or more search terms (hint: it can be the subject Musicals), select "Performing Arts Research TOFT" from the list of locations, then hit "Submit." Be sure to look at the full catalog record for any film you want to see, because it will give you information about any special restrictions on access. I've occasionally come across films that require written permission--it was easy to get it, but I couldn't just walk in and watch those particular videos.

I work at the library, and no, Hamilton hasn't been videotaped yet. And when it is recorded, it won't be available for viewing until the show closes -- same as Phantom, which was taped in 1988, or Wicked, which was taped in 2004.
This thread dates back over ten years, so some of the info is out of date, but the phone number in the screening room is still (212) 870-1642. And the most up-to-date info about TOFT itself can be found in the NYPL website, or in Wikipedia.
Thanks for the confirmation!
