Liz Taylor Nearing the End?

This is incredibly sad news. She's certainly become something of a ridiculous parody of herself in the last decade or so, but it's Liz Taylor! I hope, if this is true, her end is peaceful and painless.

re: Liz Taylor Nearing the End?

I will always admire her for her acting ability and charity work, but am disappointed on how she seemed to basically give up on life after her 70th birthday. What are the chances Burton's last wife will allow her to be buried next to her husband, and why wouldn't she want to be buried next to Mike Todd?

re: Liz Taylor Nearing the End?

I remember her appearing on a chat show on British tv some years ago and was being asked about her relationship with Burton. She talked about how they connected spiritually and at that precise moment, a bird flew into the studio and was fluttering around the ceiling. Taylor said, 'That's Richard'. Unforgettable.

Let's hope this is not true. She is truly the last of the great stars.

re: Liz Taylor Nearing the End?

If she is on her way out, at least we can be glad in knowing she won't be alone. There's nothing better than passing while surrounded by friends and family. At least they know and can prepare to say goodbye... it won't be a surprise.

May she pass peacefully.

Somehow this story has not appeared on any other newswire, which makes me somewhat skeptical.

re: Liz Taylor Nearing the End?

I hadn't noticed her becoming "a ridiculous parody of herself" at all. I just noticed that she was seen out and about much less, and mostly for appearances that would support her AIDS Charities.

If she is indeed declining in health, what's so wrong about withdrawing from public appearances?

"seemed to basically give up on life after her 70th birthday"

I'm not sure that's a fair statement. The woman did have brain surgery (on top of many other problems) so who really knows how she was ultimately affected.

Many people, for a great many reasons, should be thankful to her, and miss her presense in our lives.

re: Liz Taylor Nearing the End?

I absolutely agree with you. She has been in pain for years with meds. taking over her personality. She has tried to be her gracious self at all times when making appearances. God bless her for her AIDS fight.

I can't believe it. She's one of my all-time favorite film actresses. Every time I watch Suddenly, Last Summer, BUtterfield 8, and especially ...Virginia Woolf?, I am constantly blown away.

re: Liz Taylor Nearing the End?

She is one of those people that was born to be filmed - almost unbelievable luminosity. The great revelation for me, however, was how powerful and commanding she could be on stage. She was spectacular in THE LITTLE FOXES.

re: Liz Taylor Nearing the End?

I sure hope this isn't true. She's the ultimate Hollywood icon. For me, she, in her youth was the most beautiful woman on Earth. Her generosity and dedication to the funding of AIDS research will go down in history.

I also thought her acting was darn good at times.

re: Liz Taylor Nearing the End?

I remember watching her in Jane Eyre. They tried to make her one of the orphans in that terrible school, but she was just so beautiful (9 or 10 at that point,I think) that it didn't make sense and she stole every scene she was in simply by standing in the background of the scene!

What's even better about Liz is that she wasn't too vain to put on 30 pounds and play Martha for all she was worth in 1966.

re: Liz Taylor Nearing the End?

I'm not really familiar with any of her works other than hearing what she was in, but it is just such a sad story to hear a film legend so close to the edge that they plan their own funeral. I mean it makes sense, but it is so sad to hear how far gone she seems to be and it's just tragic hearing about it.

re: Liz Taylor Nearing the End?

Seventy Four years old is not considered "old" anymore, and that is what makes this news rather sad. For someone who has done so much for others, it's sad to think her life would be cut short.

Cforcompany...if you can get your hands on the dvd, check her out in Suddenly Last Summer, Place in the Sun, Butterfield 8 or even Father of the Bride (original version, of course!). It's hard to not list all of them, as I am struggling to think of a movie I did not enjoy her in! Cleopatara was a bit over the top and campy, but even that is fun to watch! She rarely struck out!

Add to that list --

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Giant, Raintree County, Ivanhoe, The Last Time I Saw Paris, The Sandpiper, The Mirror Cracked, A Little Night Music, National Velvet, even Little Women.

A remarkable woman of great beauty, talent, and compassion!

I hope she still hangs on --

JM2, i just adore that version of "Jane Eyre", also "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" the way she and Burton just tore into each other! Just amazing.

Wait a minute-Liz is so huge (not physically) that news like this would be front page and there'd be coverage on tv.
