Maybe Shirley Mac Laine and Julie Andrews, but there are no others!
I just love them and had to say it.

Haha, I'm really sorry, but your Sarah Brightman avatar that says DIVA is delightfully contradictory!

"How can That Streisand Woman be a BROADWAY Diva when she hasn't done a Broadway show in over 40 years?"
And she's only done 2 Broadway shows at that. By that count, Glenn Close should be a bigger Broadway diva because she's done more than 2 shows.
I guess people like Bernadette Peters, Patti LuPone, Chita Rivera and several others are just "also-rans".

And how many Broadway credits does she have that her former husband didn't write/produce?

I think Audra should be on that list. She has 4 Tonys. And I agree, Harvey and Lane qualify!

"Is Patti not a diva...?"
She's said that she isn't, or at least that she doesn't like the term being applied to her.

Barbra is FAR from being a Broadway diva. She only has 2 Broadway credits:
Miss Marmelstein in I CAN GET IT FOR YOU WHOLESALE (1962)
Fanny Brice in FUNNY GIRL (1964)
That's it.

It's a bit absurd to not give Streisand props for her Broadway contributions even if she was technically on stage for just two shows. She was in three movies based on Broadway productions (Funny Girl, Hello Dolly, and On a Clear Day), plus a few other movie musicals which were very "Broadway" (Funny Lady, Yentl). And any one of those movies were viewed by more people than ever attend an actual Broadway show in a given year. Her two Broadway albums "The Broadway Album" and "Back to Broadway" brought Broadway to the millions like no other "Broadway" recording in the '80's and 90's. On her non-Broadway albums, there is always a smattering or two of a few Broadway songs.
To minimize her contributions to the Broadway musical form is not correct.

So by this definition, people such as Ella Fitzgerald and Sinead O'Connor should be Broadway divas.

Posted: 2/26/09 at 12:49pmI am saying that in the '80's and 90's a lot more people were aware of Broadway (in any form) than they would have been without Streisand. And by a lot--I mean millions.

And yet how many times has she sung on The Tony Awards in the last 40 years? In past years, The Tony Awards have several times been almost thrown off the air because nobody watches. How much could she have boosted their viewership just by showing up and singing (or even lip synching) one song? Heck, she could have even recorded a video to be shown at the Tonys.
