Longest Running Show without a Tony
#1Longest Running Show without a Tony
Posted: 6/11/12 at 2:07pmSo as I watched the Tony's last night and noticed that SPIDER-MAN did not get the nod for costumes and scenery, I wondered: "What is the longest running show on Broadway that did not receive a single Tony Award?". I know that everyone will chime in on whether it should/shouldn't have won, but I'm curious as to what type of record it will need to beat to take that honor.

See, wicked1492, that only works if the search answers the question.
Otherwise you end up looking smug, and stupider than the questioner, to boot.

Yeah, Spiderman, will probably not come close to Mamma Mia's run. But, it is looking like it might have the legs to make it's money back...And it has had a longer run than many that have won a Tony...

Sorry my comment was supposed to be "Wicked1492..." I wasn't referring to the show Wicked. I was referring to the poster.

Mamma Mia with 10 years and still going....
with zero nominations...are Life with Father a play (39-47) with 3224 performances but that was before the Tonys began
Oh Calcutta revival with 5959 performances(76-89)..not sure if it was eligible to be nominated
Gemini a play with 1819 performances (77-81)

Erin -
Spider-Man has a very long way to go before it can even think about recouping. With its huge production and running costs, I think it was the New York Times that said it would need to play for ten years to almost sell out crowds to recoup its investment.

Posted: 6/11/12 at 2:23pmI honestly think that Spider-Man should have won those Tonys. I know that it's not the greatest piece of theatre out there but the sets and costumes are simply amazing. I'm sure it was mostly because Spider-Man pulled the stupid stunt of having the the Free Tonys Performance. They probably decided that they shouldn't get anything after that.

Well if common sense (finding the list of longest running shows, figuring out which ones don't have Tonys) were just used more often, we'd be spiraling less rapidly towards this:

Ahh, but see, I had no idea Oh, Calcutta had never won a Tony. So, doing it that way, wicked1492, would not have answered my question. My guess would have been Mamma Mia.

Not all of us are so incredibly talented and filled with the utmost common sense to do a search. Bravo to you that you are so much better then all of us.

Posted: 6/11/12 at 2:35pmif spidermans running costs are 1 million according to some reports it has mad $33 million in profit...and if it continues to sell like it does it will be out of the whole by Christmas 2013...but according to other reports its nut is 1.25 million meaning that it has made only $15 million thus far meaning that it will likely have to run another 4 years to make a profit...but business has clearly been slowing down for them and if their business doesn't pick up by at least $100,000 a week they will be closed by september....

Don't you think Spiderman is too big to fail?
So to stop it closing it will receive a federal bailout.

Statements like this can be confusing. There are around 800 Tony voters. I doubt that "they" all got together and said "let's teach Spider Man a lesson." It's not like other shows didn't have matinees on Sunday as well. Greg Barnes did some amazing work on Follies. As for set, yes, George Tsypin did some incredible work on Spider Man, but the award is for best, not biggest.

Posted: 6/12/12 at 6:41amI always feel that when costumes or the set are MORE impressive then the show as a whole, then it actually HASN'T done a good job. The job of a set or costumes is not to be the star but to compliment the show. Didn't happen in Spidey. (IMHO)
