I am wondering if maybe some celebs are that way because they are tired of seeing other people make a buck off of eBay on them. I remember that NY Times article about the Producers cd signing when Nathan Lane half joked that the stack of cd's he had just auto'd for one fan would be on eBay in less than an hour.
Sigourney Weaver charges for her autograph and it goes to charity...I know of a few other stars who have done that in the past. I don't see anything wrong with it, but perhaps Ms. Swit could have made mention of that fact a bit more publicly so stage door fans would have not been caught off guard? Maybe the stage door attendant could come out beforehand and give people the chance to leave with dignity before having feelings hurt?
It's not uncommon for actors who have had previous hits only sign for the show they are currently in. When I saw Wishful Drinking an announcement was made that Carrie would only sign posters and playbills from the show - no Star Wars stuff. And there are tons of other examples.
I wish Allison Mack had the same policy when she had been in Love Loss. The sidewalk was packed with people holding Smallville stuff when I came out after seeing the show. I find going to the stage door armed with a collection of things to be signed without actually seeing the show is much tackier than Ms. Swit asking for a donation to a charity.
That being said I am going to see Love Loss next Saturday and I'm hoping to get my picture taken with Ms Swit since she is the reason I am returning to the show (along with Mary Testa).

We must have different Gods. My God said "do to others what you would have them do to you". Your God seems to have said "My Way or the Highway".
Carrie Fisher should be happy to sign ANYTHING! Please. The lady had virtually ZERO career after Star Wars. If I were her I'd thank my lucky stars anyone even cares about my boozey behind.
I saw 'Times Stands Still' earlier this month. Christina Ricci didn't sign much (she was in a hurry; we found out later that she had some event to go to), but she only signed stuff from the show. There was a guy who just reeked of being a memorabilia agent who didn't get his random photoshoot photo signed. I don't know if this is the norm for her or not, but a lot of actors do that (Brian d'Arcy James did sign my Wild Party Playbill though).
@FlyingMonkey1223 Carrie didn't want to sign copies of her popular books either, as thats what book signings are for. It was strictly playbills.

I hate to disappoint you Eris0303, but Loretta Swit does not pose for pictures. I've seen the show with 14 different casts, and she was the first actress to turn down photo requests. She was respectful about it.
When I saw the show, she flatly refused to sign a picture from M.A.S.H. brought by a collector/reseller. They didn't see the show, and I totally agree with that action. The staff at the Love,Loss stage door makes it clear that the actors will only sign items from the show, and do a great job of maintaining order compared to other shows.
I'm only hoping this holds true when I see Alexis Bledel and Nikki Blonsky in the show next month.

While I hate to bring this back up (not!), I can attest to this first hand. After Love, Loss, and What I Wore tonight at the Parker Playhouse in Ft Lauderdale, Ms. Swit signed my Playbill gladly, but asked for $20 for a photo, and made me swear to not post it on Facebook.
Daisy Egan looked disgusted by this, and told me she doesn't charge for photos because she's "cheap and easy."
Myra Lucretia Taylor was super sweet, and gladly signed my NINE playbill and CD.
She needs the money for corrective plastic surgery. But sadly the only way she's ever going to look human again is if Belle falls in love with the beast.
Loretta will do anything for a buck. She did Burger King commercials in the 80s and is a vegetarian. A stage hand would have to bite The Whopper she was holding for her and they kept having to replace the Whoppers because she thoughts the bite was too big and made her look like a pig. They eventually had a little girl bite the Whopper.

Bernadette Peters asks for a $10 donation to either Broadway Barks or Broadway Cares if you mail her something to sign, BUT, does not require you to pull out your checkbook at the stagedoor.
