I'm curious: does she charge everyone for her autograph, or just the people with MASH material who will (presumably) be selling it on eBay?
"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe."
-John Guare, Landscape of the Body
I can almost guarantee that if you asked her to sign a Playbill or asked for a photo with her, she would gladly take one.
She saw that person as a memorabilia agent so she was going to charge them.
For the record, many stars will not sign things from past shows or films to separate theatre goers from autograph merchants.
I think she is totally within her rights.
"The sexual energy between the mother and son really concerns me!"-random woman behind me at Next to Normal
"I want to meet him after and bang him!"-random woman who exposed her breasts at Rock of Ages, referring to James Carpinello
Oh, I originally thought she charged them like a bull.
"If this is going to be a Christian nation that doesn't help the poor, either we have to pretend that Jesus was just as selfish as we are, or we've got to acknowledge that He commanded us to love the poor and serve the needy without condition and then admit that we just don't want to do it." -Stephen Colbert
I'm not doubting that the money she gets goes to charity, however a polite "i only sign playbills" is a lot more tactful than asking someone for $25 on the street.
What Tazbar said. We have one anonymous poster's word that it happened the way it did - and that poster has a reputation for being entitled and often trashes performers. I think it would be fair, under the circumstances, to give a performer the benefit of the doubt before rushing to judgement and responding the way you did in your earlier (now deleted) post.
Celeste Holme used to charge for autographs but the money went to UNICEF. (She used to carry a special little purse just for the money she recceved from autographs)
Regardless, charging a fan 25 bucks to sign anything is ridiculous! Sign it and shut up. She should be grateful that anyone cares about her these days, given her limited career after MASH. "Donating it to charity" is BS.
