Do they not do "Best Actor in a Musical" etc? They just lump them all together? Seems all the acting awards were for Plays.
I don't understand how Vanya...Spike was only nominated for costumes.
I'm so sad that "Dogfight" beat "Giant" for Best Musical. Dogfight was okay, but "Giant" was genius. At least to me.

For me, Vanya was a fun time but it didn't hold a candle to the other nominees. I thought the Lortels, for the most part, got it right across the board - certainly more than the other award committees.

Glad Shuler Hensley got it for THE WHALE. I wasn't wild about the show, but he was fantastic.

Year after year, one of my gripes with the Lortels are with how poorly musical performers are represented in the nominations.
There are 5 nominees for Best Play; 5 nominees for Best Musical. And there are 20 slots for Performances. (The Lortels do not separate actors in plays from musicals.) Of those 20 slots, only ONE of the nominated actors came from a musical: Rebecca Naomi Jones in 'Murder Ballad.' Granted, there are far more plays Off-Broadway than musicals, but is only 1 performer worthy of a Lortel nomination this season? What about Judy Kuhn or Ryan Silverman in 'Passion'? Lindsay Mendez in 'Dogfight'? Etc.
Among other musical performers who have been passed over for a Lortel NOMINATION: Christine Ebersole in 'Grey Gardens' and Steve Kazee in 'Once.' Both of whom went on to win Tonys.

Very satisfied with the recognition for DOGFIGHT, THE WHALE and Shuler Hensley, all well deserved.
