You don't have to see the movie at all. It's extremely corny, badly written with some of the worst acting you'll ever see on screen. The musical is far superior to the movie.

I saw the show yesterday, and would opine that the musical's biggest mistake is its (mostly 2nd act) adherence to the film's blend of "teenage comedy" and a darker, more psychologically compelling dive into the allegory of vampirism.
It has one of those act 2 starters through the younger son's prism on vampires, and though it's arguably justified - it's in the movie - the intrusion of cliches that have been recycled and revised since early Stephen King undercuts the show's ambitions: to find a fresh allegory in the vampire subculture. As soon as we get into the heart stakes and garlic stuff, all of the subtler elements are upstaged. I was moved by the re-minted tropes - the group that's lived in the abandoned iron works since 1906 and became a rock band - so the little boy comic book catalog of lore feels like pandering. The show feels strongest when it approaches the undead with that Anne Rice earnestness. No apologies. So winking, even if in the DNA of the story, cheapens it for me. Again, mine may be a subjective take.
