Love Never Dies -Adelphi Theatre, London 2010

I have entered a few posts about LND on other sites after seeing it last Wednesday. I downloaded the original cast recording from Sky Songs yesterday and have now played it many times. Apparently this is not available to you guys on the other side of the pond at the moment (sorry).

If ALW and Really Useful Group have any sense, they will release it for immediate download via iTunes and others and not wait until the day before opening night on 9 March.

Despite having misgivings about the production in terms of some story aspects and production design (which they may fix before opening night) I honestly feel that the this is one of the greatest musical theatre scores to emerge over the last quarter of a century.

Many people have commented that the performances in the show are faultless - they are. Unsurprisingly this is reflected in the cast recording. The music is achingly good; the libretto works really well when heard a few times. The performers couldn't do any better.

It might be fashionable to knock Andrew Lloyd Webber - but if anyone who actually loves musical theatre really listens to this work - it is a fabulous achievement.

If the director, set designer, costume designer have 'messed up' in various departments - so be it and I don't really care. This score is sublime and the man ought to be given the credit for an amazing piece of work. Listened to in its entirety I absolutely love it and will now see it again however it has being produced.

Ramin Karimloo, Sierra Boggess and the rest of the company are brilliant.

I don't pretend that the current production is is faultless but if it gets 'buried' because there aren't enough fairground attractions onstage to keep the kids happy it will be a travesty.

LND comprises a wonderful theatrical score.

(I am a regular theatregoer - not in Really Useful Group's pay etc. etc.)

Don't worry, your credibility isn't in tatters, (unless you're really Baz B!!!)

I agree that the score has strong elements and a lovely orchestration at times, but don't you feel that it is saggy, too? There is some terrible filler- Bathing Beauty, however you look at it (or listen) is horrid. Beauty Underneath appears to have been beamed in from Mars. And the lyrics- there are some truly hideous couplets.

Once again, the score seems to bear the typical hallmarks of late ALW- lovely ideas, not fully developed or polished as they should be.

I'm not really sure what 'saggy' means.

'Bathing Beauty' is signposted in the show as being 'a little more earthbound' than the etherial Christine Daae's anticipated performance on the same bill. Isn't Meg's song supposed to be a little vulgar in relation to the aria 'Love Never Dies' performed by the great opera star? I think that this might be to underline the fact that however much she craves Mr Y's attentions Meg's a bit of a non-starter in comparison.

We have seaside entertainment here in the UK in places like Blackpool which I would guess would equate (on a more minor level) to Atlantic City or Vegas in the States. In present day terms it would be a bit like Angela Gheorghiu being asked to close for Bette Midler. Great performers - but on the same bill?

The fact that the show has contrasting musical styles isn't 'saggy'. How you handle the co-existence is another matter, of course.

Just found out that I won't be getting to cover this one professionally - too much demand for press tickets (depsite putting my request in well in advance, grr). Guess it's time to find an upper circle seat at the Adelphi...

Exedore, they arn't really that bad. I was in Row K. You could maybe even get one of the ones at the front for £37.50 as nothing really happens at the front of the stage until the very end where everyone leans forward anyway.

Does anyone have a picture of the show curtain? And can I just ask, where does Fleck come in the plot?

So now RUG are releasing photos of the Phantom without mask- how very odd. Part of the mystique has always been- what is under the mask?

Very strange.

The photos are about 6th or 7th down- the curtain call.

The set looks rather un-atmospheric, (maybe it's the rather flat lighting), and the balcony rather suggests that moulded plastic was available at the turn of the century.

It doesn't really measure up to Maria Bjornson's work.

I don't know what you're talking about. There are no photos of the deformity on that page. Can you link to the photo?

Incroyable!

The Phantom strikes again! First the score is released, then withdrawn. Now the photos selection has changed!

There were 2 photos of the curtain call with the full make-up on show!

This is the first new ALW show I have seen, since being a contributor to BWW anyway, most of you know on here I am a bit of a Webberphile, he planted the seed of love of musical theatre in me and my grounding of musical theatre comes from his shows. I made the big mistake of reading the spoilers on here, being very curious minded, so I kind of knew the plot.
‘Love Never Dies, but by the law of averages it can do sometimes’. No I wasn't disappointed with the latest musical blockbuster from The Lord, I just wasn't thrilled, in most places it was very good, the score was very good with a couple of exceptions, There is a lot of operatic high notes in this show, I have to put that down to The Lords recent castration. This show got the right balance between projections and set this time, where ALW failed on his last project (The Woman in White), however the song and set for ‘Bathing Beauty' was awful and unnecessary. There are stunning gems in the show such as ‘Til I Hear You Sing Again', 'Love Never Dies', ‘Devil Take The Hind Most’, ‘The Beauty Underneath’, and ‘Beneath A Moonless Sky’. The lighting for this behemoth was simply dreadful.

************************Possible Spoilers********************************

I was really shocked how passive the Phantom is compared with his character in The Paris Opera House 10 years earlier, the Phantom did not possess that spine-chilling potency he once did, he just came across as a ordinary guy with a deformed face, he did not have that magical power, indeed is arrival and his non disappearance at the end was a non event compared with the 'Phantom of The Opera' however the ending was very very moving, perhaps this is what the creators wanted?
Just before the interval you are invited into the ‘Phantoms’ liar, which gives turn to amazing theatre magic, with a walking skeleton with human legs, automated Gorilla playing rock music, a chandelier of singing medusa’s, this set is stunning and so is the illusion at the bar at the beginning of the 2nd part, just before ‘Devil Take the Hind Most’.
Ramin Karimloo and Sieraa Boggess are brilliant, so was Summer Strallen and Liz Robertson, however Joseph Millson who played Raoul was out of his comfort zone, from his native plays.
Leaving the show I wasn’t buzzing like when I saw Hairspray, The Producers and Phantom of the Opera etc, but then I am not sure you are really meant to feel euphoric? It is more of a show where you feel reflective on leaving, a bit like Spring Awakening or Next to Normal; this is not to say a show is bad because you come out reflective. I say this show is average, but over the last couple of days I cannot get the tunes out of my head. I am incapable of telling you if this show is really good or really bad, I really don’t know, that’s why I say it is average; I just have to see the show again.
