LuPone and Patinkin are going on a concert-tour beginning March 2009... which means we have our first ball-park (at the latest) date for when she and her show will depart.

actually, there was a video with Riedel a month or so ago and she said she was leaving March 3rd.
HA! Their first show is where I went to college.
i guess that's when it'll close. I just can't see it lasting without LuPone.
I guess I just always assumed since the show was called PATTI LUPONE GYPSY that it would close once her contract was up... silly me.
At the rate the show is going, does anyone know if it will likely recoup by the time her contract ends?
yeah i knew patti would be gone by March as soon as the Mandy concert dates were announced.

These concerts have been on the books for almost a year. Doesn't mean that she's leaving the show just yet. Perhaps her standby will cover for her? Who knows?
Tickets are only on sale through January 2009. Depending on how the producers of the show work it out, "Gypsy" could go dark on those concert nights. Who knows?

nealb1, it's not just a string of individual concerts. It's a tour that is playing steadily from March through May. The show isn't going dark for three months.
They'll close the show with LuPone.
If you look at the schedule, it's a few days here....a day or 2 there, a week there, with breaks in between, etc. Like I said earlier.....who knows...nobody does.
Once Telecharge opens up ticket sales in March, we'll know what's going on. Time will tell.

There's a reason the tour began booking in March, and it's because LuPone made the decision to leave GYPSY at the end of her contract at that time (and made that decision known to the show's producers quite some time ago.)
The question isn't whether or not she's leaving, but whether or not they'll close the show in March when she does.
Would probably make sense to close the show when she leaves. Granted, she's not a mega draw that Hugh Jackman was in "The Boy From Oz," but she's a superstar, none the less.
Remember when Hugh was on vacation, the show went dark for the entire week. That's unheard of!

I would assume that they would close the show with her in it. Besides the fact that the title reads "Patti LuPone Gypsy" as if it all were one word. The show never would have left City Center and moved to Broadway if it wasn't for Patti Playing Mamma Rose. I feel that because this show is so Patti centered, it will close with her in the role as oppose to bringing in someone else to replace her.
Keep in mind that this show was revived around 4 years ago. There was no real need to revive it other then the fact that Patti was going to play Rose. It isn't really selling out because, like I said, it was revived four years ago. Maybe if there was a longer period of time between this production and the last one there might be more people who want to see it. I feel like there are a lot of people out there who have no need to see it because they feel like it was just on Broadway and have no need to see it again.

Did the actors get paid for the week Hugh Jackman went on vacation?
Oh you never know -- I mean if they were able to get a
REBA MCENTIRE GYPSY or a CATHERINE ZETA JONES GYPSY marquis up there, they could maybe stay open.
Unlikely yes - but impossible?
RentBoy86, yes.
I wonder if they are talking to other names about replacing LuPone. I can't imagine Reba doing another replacement gig or Jones even thinking about it, even if it is GYPSY. Especially after LuPone's performance has been hailed as the performance of the year.
Jones would never do it, but the idea of her doing it in ten years makes me wet my pants just a little bit.
That Bernadette Peters production just ****** everything up for everyone.
Laurents has already said on the record that he would not allow Catherine Zeta Jones to ever play Rose.
He said he thinks she's "a second banana."
Laurents can be such a b*tch sometimes, but I still love him.
And here a thought they named her replacement. Perhaps Barbara Streisand, Arthur said he would he would let her do the movie why not on stage.
Streisand would never ever want to do 8 performances a week.
By the time Catherine Zeta Jones is old enough to play Rose Laurents probably won't be around to say no.
That's what a will is for, my dear.
