Saw Patti last night in Los Angeles, in her show with Mandy Patinkin. Everything went smoothly, but there were many moments during the show when she would be right at the edge of the stage, staring intently down into the audience. Now, maybe I was overly-sensitive, but it seemed to me like she was looking for something. Actively looking, and not just making eye contact with the audience.
And for what it's worth, there were no cellphone interruptions and I didn't see anyone in my part of the theater (front orchestra) texting or with cellphones on for any other reason. Maybe it was a fluke or maybe LA audiences are better behaved. I don't know (although I tend to believe the former over the latter).
It was a great show, by the way!

It may be your truth, but not that of...well...the majority of audiences and critics, which means logically, it is not the truth. And I don't find the truth to be bigoted and offensive, just your blanketed generalizations based on the opinions you have formed on very little facts (or simply to be contrary out of sport). If you truly believe the praise Patti gets from BWW is from "mostly middle aged lispy queens", then you are either highly delusional or merely unobservant (or both). Unless you have somehow acquired the date of borth of every member of BWW, which would be a magical feat, indeed. No, you used that description...those words...specifically to offend. And the use of them in that manner is inarguably bigoted.

I think these boards are rife with people using gay slurs all the time, like queen, Mary, homo, queer, etc. I think it is all about the intention behind it. I think there are different rules for different people on these boards that is for sure. Some people get posts deleted and banned for calling an actress fat and ugly and others seem write and post images of some of the most vile things and those seem to fly right by. It's a crapshoot out here.

Matt, My friend felt that Patti was having him and the ushers go above and beyond what they usually do. They felt that because she had asked them to go above and beyond what their job was for her personal satisfaction that she could have done it in a nicer way then be bitchy about it. He was saying that if your going to ask someone to go above and beyond then the least you can do is be nice about it. Due to the fact that she wasn't, it turned them off in wanting to help her out. You catch more flies with honey then you do wit vinegar.

Actually, the most degradation performed on this board is by younger members trying to be snarky and hip with little knowledge on the subjects at hand. Several of whom have been banned and returned under new names many times (this is actually common knowledge). I'm not living in denial, I've just been a member for twice as long as you. My feeling on it is that I'd prefer that when in the middle of a "real" show, a performer ignore the disruption that is only visible to them and maybe 10 audience members sitting nearby, instead of disrupting the show for one or two thousand people, most of whom probably would never have otherwise been distracted by it.
However, a concert is a different matter. As far as I'm concerned, if it's the kind of situation in which you're there to see a performer and not trying to suspend your disbelief with following a story, the performer can and should say whatever they want about the matter. If Patti goes off on it for 20 minutes, that's her prerogative. But I wouldn't feel the same way if I were watching Gypsy or something.

Dover, I rather agree with you. I think a concert is a performer's domain and they have broken the 4th wall, so why not. On the other hand, if I was there when she stopped "Rose's Turn" to flip out on an audience I'd be pretty let down.

I was actaully at the show in Las Vegas and have to say that it really wasn't distracting, in fact I would say she got the audience on her side with this. I do hope it doesn't become one of those things where people go hoping she goes off.
I've never worked with Ms. Lupone but back when she was starting that TV show "Life Goes On" she came into the store I worked at in Los Angeles and I have to say she was just lovely. She was sweet, funny and I still remember her one of the kinder celebrities I assisted (and there were a lot of them).
