Did you not see Carol Burnett do it in Putting it Together? I'm pretty sure she was over 50 at that point.
But Burnett didn't play Amy, she just sang the song.
I don't really see why age would matter that much. Joanne doesn't have to be the only older friend. And Marin Mazzie doesn't look old.
I just don't see Marin as Amy at all. Ripley is more Amy, and she has played the role already.
Marin seems like a Sarah to me. Though that role would be a waste of her singing talents.
I agree with you there. I don't see her as Amy, I just didn't understand why her age was such an issu, that's all.
I think Ripley would be a fabulous Amy!
Bobby is supposed to be 35-40 and commitment-phobic, surrounded by couples. Having an Amy who is 50, marrying for the first time, and almost backing out of it completely goes against one of the central arcs of the story. Mazzie is old enough to play Joanne convincingly.
I would LOVE to hear Jason Danieley sing Sorry-Grateful

Stritch was in her mid-40s originating Joanne. The casting in that role (as in many over the years) has crept up and up in age as our expectations of what reads as "old" has changed. LuPone is 61 or 62, and can pull off the "cougar" aspect fine. My problem with her is that she is blowsy and coarse as a performer, and Joanne (if played convincingly) comes from money and class. LuPone is also a careless and sometimes lazy singer, unless directed with an extremely strong hand.

@philcrosby, I think Price has the strong guiding hand needed to make LuPone do her best work.
