The trailer for the Netflix's film version of August Wilson's "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom", starring Oscar winner Viola Davis and the late Chadwick Boseman is on YouTube. This film will most definitely be covered in Oscar nominations, Viola's transformation is amazing, and I also believe that Mr. Boseman will get a posthumous nom as well. The film will open in movie theatres in November and premiere on Netflix a week before Christmas.
I have no memories of the Whoopi revival. Was it any good?
I know absolutely nothing about this, so apologies if this is a stupid question, but - is that Viola singing or is she miming?

We felt it was lacking in energy.
Raves for the film, so far. 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, with 46 reviews.

I am not always excited for movie adaptations but boyohboy does this one look great. I thought Denzel's Fences a few years back was about as good as adaptation gets, and this looks like it's going to be just as good.

Miming? I think you mean lip syncing. Anywho...a quick Google search turned up this article (https://variety.com/2020/film/awards/ma-rainey-black-bottom-oscars-chances-chadwick-boseman-viola-davis-1234832031/ which states she sang ONE of the songs.
I cannot get over how incredible it is that Denzel Washington is producing adaptations of each play in the Century Cycle. I can’t wait to watch this. Not only is August Wilson one of my favorite playwrights, but this cast is major.
