First official musical opening of the 2025-26 Broadway season.
I’m curious to see who’ll write the Times review for this and the openings to come, as Jesse Green’s recent reassignment leaves the publication without a chief theatre critic at the moment.
Adam Feldman now says 9pm embargo lift.

"The production is at its liveliest, though, when it feels the most new—which is principally in three of its central performances. Sakalove’s good-humored Rosie is utterly endearing in a warm, natural way, and Steele gives Tanya a tinge of specifically Black fabulousness (and breaks out impressive moves in “Does Your Mother Know”). And both of them know how to make fresh, funny marks on their roles without stealing focus. Sherrill seems an unusual choice for Donna at first—she looks more like a Real Housewife than a hardscrabble taverna owner—but she has a tremendous voice, and by the time she gets to her high-drama 11-o’clock showstopper, “The Winner Takes It All,” she’s made you actually care, however briefly, about the show’s emotional stakes."

‘Mamma Mia!’ Review: A Revival of the 2001 Jukebox Musical Offers Another Undiluted Shot of ABBA Joy. Only It’s Now a Double Layer Cake of Nostalgia
It's the same show, maybe a bit more bumptious, but still a feast for your pleasure centers.

Revisiting Mamma Mia!, Where the 21st Century Never Arrives
https://www.vulture.com/article/theater-review-mamma-mia-broadway-revival-abba.html
"Mamma Mia! should theoretically function as a star vehicle considering the plot is delightful nonsense meant to be outshone by the songs and performances, whether by force of belting or pure charisma. Everyone onstage here can outsing their counterparts in the movie (at the very least, everyone’s far above the level of Pierce Brosnan). But the film has the energy of people who can’t believe they’re getting away with a scam, whereas this cast, seemingly hemmed in by careful brand management, comes across as competent and dutiful, not the vibe you want from characters who are on eternal vacation."

Mamma Mia! review: My, my, how can we resist the ABBA musical's charming return to Broadway?
The beloved stage show, which spawned two film adaptations starring Meryl Streep and Amanda Seyfried, returns to NYC for a limited time run.

‘Mamma Mia!’ Broadway Review: Here We Go Again
https://deadline.com/2025/08/mamma-mia-broadway-review-1236485619
"The ninth-longest running Broadway show of all time, Mamma Mia! ran for 14 years at the Winter Garden following its opening shortly after the Towers fell. This touring production’s stop at the Garden has all the makings of a homecoming, and it’s a strenuously joyous one.
Well, joyous if you’re a Mamma Mia! fan, more strenuous if you’re not, and by now it seems likely that everyone knows to which group they belong."

BROADWAY REVIEW: ‘Mamma Mia’ still worth the money, money, money

"
For those who’ve seen that tour half a dozen times, the only surprise is the addition of more live musicians for Broadway, union minimums being a helpful thing in this case. Actual acoustic sounds have replaced some pre-programmed tracks. Awesome! Benny Andersson’s synth work on the Yamaha GX1 and the Moog Polymoog is legendary but “Mamma Mia” combined the original sound with Martin Koch’s clever theatrical arrangements, and it needs lots of humans in the pit.
Happily, that touring cast starred Christine Sherrill as Donna, a star who lacks only name recognition. Sherrill’s massive but vulnerable belt is ideally matched for this material. She’s the best Donna of all time in my book, and I’ve seen a dozen or more from London to Las Vegas. Never has a Donna better nailed “The Winner Takes It All,” the show’s brilliant idea to rehab a tragic break-up song that had been rendered weirdly up-tempo in Abba’s original recording. The rest of the cast is just fine; the oldsters give the material respect while having fun, and the kids all seem delighted just to be there."
DTLI Consensus: Because just one look wasn’t enough, the mother of all jukebox musicals makes an emphatic — even if a bit dated and too bombastic — return to New York.

Apologies if this has been discussed elsewhere and I missed it but will this be eligible for Tonys for Best Revival since it's sort of a "return engagement." I know it's same Director, Choreographer & Designers so they'd all be ineligible.

Yes, Mamma Mia will, but Beetlejuice will not.
Honestly, these were the reviews I was expecting. Short of making a site-specific immersive production in Greece or having the audience vote on a father like DROOD, there is no real way to reinvent this show.
It’s a “keep it simple, stupid” formula that won’t ever fail the show in the decades to come.

Nice reviews. I think Mamma Mia! is essentially critic-proof, and looking at the sales, they will have no problem filling the houses at fairly high price points for the duration of their limited run.
I have always had a soft spot for this show and had a lot of fun seeing it again last weekend. I thought the physical production looked fine and the cast was great with the exception of the actor playing Sam... He had a great voice, but his acting was so over the top and hammy that I found myself cringing in my seat.

Heh. I was just about to post that, since bagging on the NYT critic is de rigueur for these threads, I find Vincentelli to be a deeply mediocre writer and completely uninteresting critic. When there are several critics out there with interesting things to say and interesting ways to say them, giving her the job would be a shame. I don't know why they use her at all.

It got the faint requisite praise it deserved for being diversionary fun. That’s all the critical analysis it needs. Nobody is going to be referring to the Times to make an informed decision about if they want to go to the freakin’ ABBA musical.

Happy people are enjoying it. I've seen it eight times including the Hollywood Bowl version. Have all the films and soundtracks. I love it BUT I do not need to see it again.
