I think the interview makes it clear that there is plan to conclude the 25th anniversary tour with a Broadway return. A revival on Broadway of Mamma Mia was inevitable even back when it closed in 2014. I'd argue that the property has never been more popular. Both films (say whatever you want about them) have proven to be extremely popular -- especially with young people as of late. And ABBA seems to be going through a major new renaissance moment. Depending on theatre availability, I can completely picture the Shuberts plucking this back into the Broadhurst in the Summer of 2025.

Would have loved this show to return post Lockdown, i think it would have gone over like gangbusters. Hell, get an all-star cast. I’m dreaming here but Audra as Donna? Jane krakowski as Tanya? Jen simard as Rosie?

I can see Mamma Mia reopening on Broadway short term then transferring Off-Broadway for an open ended run. It just seems mad that a production isn’t currently running in New York.

I wonder if any consideration has gone toward having Benny and Bjorn write new songs for the potential third movie. I know the point of the original was these songs you have a nostalgia for but it's become far more than that. As the article touches on, Mama Mia has become a brand in and of itself. Plenty of fans weren't even born when ABBA reigned.

I know they declined writing a new song for the first film, so who knows. That being said, there are plenty of leftovers to choose from. I don’t think anybody is going to really mind if we hear Dancing Queen for the 37th time either

If it comes back to Broadway I hope it’s not a replica staging: the original musical’s simplicity is much less appealing (and now much less iconic) than the film series’s zany maximalist aesthetic.

Dancing Queen will absolutely be in another movie. Will it out camp it's usage in the second? Absolutely not. I've never seen anything gayer. ABBA just released a new album on 2021. They're not above releasing new music and I think they would for another Mamma Mia.

At the risk of sounding creatively bankrupt I wouldn’t mind if the third film uses the same songs from the first two films in a different context. Those songs are unbelievably iconic and are so popular because we listen to them again, and again, and again.
So give us a third rendition of Dancing Queen, another group version of Mamma Mia, a striped back acoustic version of Voulez Vouz, a duet version of Winner Takes It All, etc.
