MOST DISAPPOINTING SHOW(S) THAT WAS HAILED BY THE CRITICS AS GREAT

Posted: 10/12/05 at 1:35pm"The Producers"--I still don't understand how this show shut out "The Fully Monty," which I feel is superior to "The Producers" in every way. To me, "The Producers" felt more like a parody of a musical than an actual musical.

The Producers.
I read all the "second coming" type of reviews it was getting and was thoroughly underwhelmed by it. The music was forgettable and the acting unbearably hammy. And not in the "we know we are being hammy, that is the purpose" kind of hammy acting either.
We referred to the leads as "Flop Sweat Man" and "Neurotic Nancy".

I have to say that "Proof" was quite disappointing. I enjoyed the material, but I really didn't enjoy Jennifer Jason Leigh in the show. I would have loved to have seen Mary Louise Parker.
I am not sure about the reviews for " Night Mother", but I was ready to shoot Edie Falco myself just to end the experience a bit sooner.

Cats
and I have no interest in seeing Woman in White even if they say it's great, and from what I've read, that's not likely.

****But the inclusion here of Carousel has left me speechless.****
I hear that! For me, "Carousel" is right behind "Snweeney Todd" and "My Fair Lady" on the list of greatest musicals.
As far as overrated goes you guys seem to already have it figured out. "The Producers" is the most overrated musical in Broadway History!!! "Urintown" and "Spamalot" are as well. As is "Phantom"
"Tha Phantom" winning Best Musical over "Into the Woods" still stings!! lol.

On the subject of Aida..
Hate to break it to some of you. But this probally the only Broadway/Musical Forum I've been on where AIDA is liked by many people. Other places I've been to tore the show apart, I remember a lot of happiness on other boards when the show announced its closing.

AIDA was a horrible show!! The only good thing about it was Heather Headley.

The mentions of Rent always are interesting to me. The first time I saw it on Broadway I HATED it, but when the show started with the original cast, it was like entirely different, superior show to what it seems to have been in recent years. Of course, I know there are those who aren't fond of it even when it did first get its start, but even this Rent fan couldn't see why it got any praise when she first saw it.

Les Miz- When I first saw it, I very much disliked it. It's too dull and dreary for my taste.
Chicago- I love the movie and the music, but the show was not so great. The choreography was not as good as it's supposed to be, and the lack of a set was more distracting than not.
Wonderful Town- The music is great, but the story is cliche and the minimal set pissed me off.

^ You obviously have an issue with shows that don't have big sets.
Chicago dosen't have a set for a reason. It's a message. Which expresses that you don't have to have a huge set to be a good show, it's all about the performers.
And WONDERFUL TOWN (the original) is one of the most raved about musicals in history. Roz Russell's reviews for the role are considered probally the best any performer has ever gotten for a musical. The revival was very faithful to the original, and the critics raved about it too.

The Producers - I enjoyed every second I was there and was laughing histarically but I don't think it was better than The Full Monty. I didn't find the Springtime for Hitler thing all that funny. Dunno why, because everything else was cracking me up, but the Hitler stuff just didnt make me laught at all.
The Lion King - It was visually pleasing, but the story sucked and some of the moments felt like time filler. Like the shadow puppets and all the random African chanting that took forever.

Posted: 10/12/05 at 6:21pmLes Miz and Phantom are the two shows in which I found myself dozing off. I just don't 'get' the obession over these shows.

Regarding Carousel:
I see and have learned about the decades-old groundbreaking moments, but overall, I find myself yawning through every performance I've ever seen, not really giving a hoot about anything going on, particularly about the endless My Boy Bill. No slam to the performer; he's usually unusually talented, but the ballad never ends.
Perhaps if I'd have performed it in high school, I'd have a different opinion (we all seem to have a soft spot for shows we've worked on), but I saw it for the first time as an adult, and didn't care for (or, for that matter, about) it.
